Finally it is official. It is going to be really interesting now :-) Would she be the first women to access the White house and the second senator in the history of the US to become a president? Doesn't matter as long as Bush is going out :-)

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Democratic U.S. Senator and former first lady
Hillary Rodham Clinton on Saturday entered the 2008 presidential race, officially joining a crowded field for her party's nomination.
The second-term U.S. senator from New York and former U.S. first lady had been widely anticipated to announce her bid to become the first woman to win the U.S. presidency. She is considered a front-runner among five other candidates in the Democratic White House field.

Her announcement comes days after a similar move by Democratic Sen. Barack Obama (news, bio, voting record) of Illinois, who is expected to be her leading party competitor and whose campaign could make him the first black U.S. president. Obama's candidacy has stoked enthusiasm among Democrats looking for an alternative to Clinton, who some fear could be too polarizing to defeat a Republican candidate next year.

"I am forming a presidential exploratory committee. I am not just starting a campaign though, I am beginning a conversation with you, with America," she said in a videotaped message on her Web site. An exploratory committee is a first step toward official candidacy and allows her to raise campaign funds and hire staff.

"After six years of
George Bush it is time to renew the promise of America," she said.

President George W. Bush was elected to a second four-year term in 2004.

The wife of former President
Bill Clinton made history with her bid for U.S. Senate in New York in 2000, becoming the first former first lady to win one of the most powerful political jobs in the nation.

Clinton, 59, was re-elected by a huge margin to a second Senate term in November.

AIMING AT BUSH

In her posted written statement, Clinton took immediate aim at what she called "six years of Bush administration failures."

"I have never been afraid to stand up for what I believe in or to face down the Republican machine," she wrote. "Only a new president will be able to undo Bush's mistakes and restore our hope and optimism.

"Only a new president can renew the promise of America -- the idea that if you work hard you can count on the health care, education, and retirement security that you need to raise your family. These are the basic values of America that are under attack from this administration every day," she wrote.

"And only a new president can regain America's position as a respected leader in the world."

Clinton said she would be launching a series of live, online video conversations with voters, beginning on Monday.

Before officially declaring her candidacy for U.S. Senate in 2000, Clinton traveled around New York on a "listening tour" to meet voters and hear their issues.

Prior to her husband's two terms in the White House, Clinton was a successful attorney and advocate of children's rights, a former member of several corporate boards and public-interest boards. She was active in causes ranging from lowering infant mortality to providing legal assistance to the poor.

"Let's talk about how to bring the right end to the war in
Iraq and restore respect for America around the world," she said a videotaped message on her Web site, mentioning several issues she would address in her campaign such as energy, health care and retirement security.

Clinton worked on the House of Representatives committee on the impeachment of President
Richard Nixon. She attended Yale Law School where she met fellow student Bill Clinton and followed her husband to Little Rock, Arkansas, where he was governor and she was a lawyer, mother and political wife.

Non-violent resistance.

Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968). Like Mahatma Gandhi, he preached non violent social struggle and civil disobedience to reach his goals and he did. He realized his dream (kind of) and nobody can deny his role in the social changes that have happened under his lead for American civil rights movement. This Baptist minister, one of youngest Nobel peace prize winner for his peaceful struggle for equal treatment had once a dream for his country. A dream where people, independent of their color and race will coexist peacefully as equals, and he got it. A proof, that dreamers can be influential and can make a difference. This speech, considered one of the greatest in history marked the 20th century in the US.

He said in regard to the declaration of independence of the US:
"In a sense we've come to our nation's capital to cash a check. When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes, black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked 'insufficient funds.'"

And also:

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'"

And finally:

"Let freedom ring. And when this happens, and when we allow freedom ring — when we let it ring from every village and every hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to speed up that day when all of God's children — black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics - will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual: "Free at last! As a reminder, nonviolence has been described by some as "the politics of ordinary people", that’s you, me and the majority of us. The Non-violence approach has been used by almost all cultures, specially the religions from Abraham’s to Mohamed (Peace be upon him). They all used non-violence approaches, at least in the beginning!!

So in these times where a lot of politic movements preach violence without any tangible results, perhaps they should consider dreaming and non-violent struggle like Gandhi or King who showed very good ones.

Qui sont-ils? Et Pourquoi ces réactions?

Même après que le pouvoir a reconnu semi-officiellement le fait que les combats armés au sud de Tunis étaient avec des groupes terroristes, les questions persistent. Qui sont-ils? Combien sont-ils? Comment ils ont eu ces armes automatiques? Sont-ils tunisiens? Qui est derrière eux? Qu’est ce qu’ils veulent? Pourquoi?

Est-ce possible que des tunisiens passent a la lutte armée a cause du Hijab comme on le dit, je ne le crois pas. Que des jeunes ont été manipulés par des clans au pouvoir est invraisemblable. C’est quoi alors toutes ces rumeurs. Pourquoi, au lieu de s’inquiéter, on se tourne l’un contre l’autre.

On a le droit de savoir qu’est ce qui se passe dans notre pays, la ou vivent des êtres chers a nous. Demander l’information est maintenant perçu comme un acte de trahison! N’est ce pas notre droit de se demander quelques éclaircissements sur des faits aussi dangereux et inédits que ceux qui se sont déroulés aux portes de la capitale. Quelques uns se croient plus patriotes que d’autres et nous donnent des leçons simplistes, comme quoi dire la vérité nuit à notre réputation. Quelle maturité intellectuelle ? Je me demande c’est quoi le fil de pensée qui les a mené a cette conclusion ? Peut être le fait de se taire est devenu une culture et celui qui ne la respecte pas est un marginal, un traitre, un vendu.

On divise au lieu de s’unir, on monte les uns contre les autres parce qu’on se croit plus tunisien que l’autre. Eh bien non, on est tous tunisiens et je n’ai jamais connu un tunisien qui méprise son pays au point de le vendre. On aime tous notre pays, ceux qui vont a la mosquée et ceux qui vont aux bars. Essayer de voir la réaction de n’importe quel tunisien en face d’un étranger qui dit du mal de la Tunisie, même s’il a raison, et vous comprendrez. N’entrez pas dans le jeu politicien qui veut utiliser ces événements pour marginaliser l’opposition ou pour affaiblir le pouvoir.

Et puis la vérité ne nuira pas au pays, au contraire, elle prépare la population à contrer ce danger qu’on ne connait pas et à se mettre la main dans la main et le combattre. Qu’il soit interne ou externe, de quel courant qu’il soit. La France est un des pays qui reçoit le plus de touristes au monde. Les attentats ou les manifestations même violentes comme celle des banlieues n’ont pas été passé sous silence par crainte que les touristes ne viennent pas. Arrêtons de simplifier les choses et a nous insulter l’un, l’autre.

Que Dieu préserve la Tunisie et TOUT les Tunisiens. Et n’oublions pas qu’on est tous responsables de notre pays, TOUS sans exception et qu’ensemble, on doit le protéger et prévenir ce genre d’activités, TOUS. Pour cela, on doit savoir ce qui se passe.

Georges W Bush admitted finally that he made a mistake, but he admitted the wrong one. He said that he was wrong by not deploying more troops to Iraq, and that’s why the situation is not acceptable to the American people. He also warned us that by deploying more troops, we will have more casualties as a reaction to his decisions, but that’s the right thing to do. He also made it clear that he is aware of Mr Maliki relationship with the Shiite Militia of Sadr but he is going to trust him this time that he will be fair and won’t mix politics and feelings. And last he made it clear to us that the 3,000 dead soldiers and the $400B were worth the effort and that an Iraq fighting terrorists is better that an Iraq harboring them.

Thank you Mr President for your wise decisions!!!!!!! What a nightmare…

Bush pushing the envelope!

Oops, Bush did it again. A month ago, while signing a postal reform act voted by the congress, he did not miss the chance to push the “envelope” by attaching a signed statement that gives the right to his administration to seize and open citizen mail “in exigent circumstances, for foreign intelligent collection”. As usual, nobody noticed right away, until recently when civil rights associations found out about this obvious Big brother law coming reminding us of Orson welles’ 1984.

This is becoming a pattern of this administration; they amend innocent laws at the last moment and take us back a few dozen years by taking our right to privacy. The reason as you can imagine is “Let us read your mail or terrorists will get us”, efficient isn’t?

There are two very dangerous aspects to such actions. First, it is the loss of privacy to American citizens and permanent residents. Second is the loss of credibility for the USA when they go teach lessons to other countries about human rights and freedom. How can they ask other countries to do what themselves don’t?

If this is not pushing the envelope, what is? :)

James Brown: The Godfather of Soul (1933-2006)

On the 25th of December 2006, the godfather of Soul passed away. James Brown is a case study of strong will and self determination and big achievements. Born in poverty in South Carolina and abandoned at 4 years old, he grew up on the streets of Augusta, Georgia and had many episodes of law breaking until adopted by a friend’s family where he got introduced to Gospel and founded his first band the Gospel Starlighters in the early 50’s.

He started in the R&B and made it in the top 10 by 1956 with “Please,Please,Please”, since then he revolutionized the world music and influenced the last half of the 20th century music. His music was an influence for soul, rock, rap, break-dancing and hip-hop. James Brown’s music has even been re-mastered and replayed by rappers like Fat Boys and Public Enemy. Many of his 800+ songs were used by hip hop samplers and DJ’s.

His innovations and hard work gained him the nicknames of “Hard working man in show business” and “The godfather of Soul”. His fast foot movement’s dance inspired Michael Jackson and Mike Jagger and so did his costumes.

JB rhythms are still present in current music and his vocal style too. This man is a god, he did it all, and he had it in him. Songs like “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” , “I Feel good”, "Get Up I Feel Like Being a Sex Machine", “I Got the feeling” still make my day anytime I listen to them.

I'll let you enjoy these 2 very old videos, the first is for "Sex Machine" and the second for "I Feel good". Notice the foot dance in the second one and don't tell me that Michael Jackson invented the moon walk.

Sectarisme.

Hier, pour la première fois j’ai regardé la vidéo de l’exécution moyenâgeuse de Saddam. Au moment fatidique, on entendait les représentants officiels de gouvernement de Mr Maliki scandant «Moqtada,Moqtada.. ». Bref ca se résume ainsi. Les shiites ont pris le pouvoir et ont exécuté le grand Satan sunnite. Un cas classique de sectarisme ou tout est simplifié et ramené a une appartenance ethnique ou religieuse ou autre secte religieuse, sociale..etc.

Comment peut on être aussi aveuglé et arriver a déclencher des guerres et des génocides pour défendre son appartenance a une secte ou groupe. Les guerres civiles et les génocides qui se sont déroulées pendant la deuxième moitie du vingtième siècle le montrent. En Yougoslavie, Rwanda, Somalie,Soudan Moyen orient et maintenant en Iraq. Les gens prennent les armes et s’en vont tuer leurs voisins pour leur appartenance à un groupe ethnique ou religieux qu’ils n’aiment pas. Ahurissant, non ? L’être humain est vraiment une énigme.

On m’a demandé une fois, c’est quoi la différence entre un iraquien shiite et sunnite. J’avoue qu’après l’avoir expliqué a mon interlocuteur américain, je me suis moi-même étonné, tellement les différences sont non significatives, surtout pour un américain !

Pourquoi aller très loin, voila un cas comique et extreme. Il y a quelque mois, ma cousine a été demandée en mariage par un des ses collègues au travail. La première question que son frère lui a posée est « Est-ce qu’il est espérantiste ? » et je vous jure qu’il ne plaisantait pas et il était même stressé quand sa sœur lui a fait savoir qu’elle n’avait aucune idée et qu’elle allait lui demander. Et mon cousin, c’est un bac+5, directeur financier dans une grande entreprise a Tunis et tout ce qui le préoccupait a propos de l’avenir de sa sœur c’est l’équipe de football que son futur beau frère préfère !!

Ce sectarisme est partagé par les grands de ce monde et les plus petits. Je n’arriverais jamais à comprendre comment l’être humain arrive a justifier un tel comportement !!

Don't be that surprised. A 40 years old father of a teenager have no choice but to listen to trash :-). Seriously the more I listen to Metallica, the more I appreciate the lyrics and "Justice for All" is no exception and shows that at least the text is not trash. What’s going on?

Since when in Tunisia we have people shooting at something other than a quail or a wild boar? Now they are shooting at police officers. What’s going on? Is it drug? I thought that this was supervised by the powerful corrupt families like the couscous connection linked to who you know. Is it the salafists?

One thing for sure is that the politics followed by our government to eradicate fundamentalism is not working. The plan of eradicating poverty and raise a middle class because fundamentalism is linked to poverty won’t work in a country where 1% of the people own 95% of the wealth.

In a country where corruption is present at all levels, we should not be surprised to see arms getting smuggled in; it is just a matter of paying whoever is in charge. When you see luxury cars being sold at the same price as in Europe despite a 200% custom tax, we should expect everything.

All what it takes to get a container full of whatever you want is to befriend one of the new lords of Tunis. The same people who are protected by the government are helping destabilizing it, that’s what you get when you have abuse of power from stupid people. It is not even a Mafia, because real Mafiosi are way smarter to initiate self-destruction.

Anyway, let’s hope that I am way wrong and that’s really coming from outside. But in this case it is scarier. I am really worried for my country, what happened to us or what is happening to us?

Le fantôme de Samsoum.

Je voulais commencer ma première note de l’année par vous souhaitant une très bonne année 2007. Malheureusement mes vœux n’atteindront jamais ceux qui vivent dans mon pays de naissance. Le pays où je viens de passer avec ma femme et mes enfants les meilleures vacances de notre vie. Je viens de rentrer il ya quelque heures pour m’apercevoir que mon jeune blog a été censuré en Tunisie. Incroyable mais vrai. J’étais offline jusqu’au 30/12 et quand j’ai essayé de connecter a Tunis le jour de l’aïd, j’ai eu le fameux 404 mais je n’y ai pas cru et je n’avais pas le temps de vérifier. Aujourd’hui j’ai la confirmation, mes chers lecteurs tunisiens ne liront pas mes vœux de bonne année !!

C’est bizarre ce que je sens en ce moment. Vu que ma vie a été toujours un combat personnel, je me suis habitué à accepter tout genre de challenge et de m’investir a fonds dans ce que je fais et j’ai pris l’habitude d’analyser tout par échec ou réussite. Mais la ce n’est ni un échec ni un succès. C’est une mort. C’est ce que je ressens, je sens une partie de moi qui est morte, inaccessible, invisible et je ne peux rien faire. On ne combat pas la mort, on la subit. Je suis un fantôme, je peux voir les gens, les écouter, mais quand je parle, ils ne m’entendent pas, ils ne me voient pas. Je n’existe plus pour eux !! J’ai été la victime d’un meurtre prémédité, il n ya même pas de motif !

Que fait-on quand on devient un fantôme ? On se tait ou on continue à parler à soi même ?

Je suis déçu de cet excès de zèle de la part de fonctionnaires qui croient veiller a la sécurité de mon pays en pratiquant des coups de ciseaux en milieu de terrain pour envoyer la balle en touche, une balle sans danger pour leur buts.

Que faire mes amis ? Cela me fait très mal et je n’ai pas l’habitude de réagir de la sorte devant les obstacles, mais la c’est différent, c’est abject, il n’y a même pas de règles de jeu.

Je suis dégouté, je me sens violé, volé, tué… mais bon la vie continue avec ou sans mon blog.

Je tiens à remercier tout les bloggeurs pour leurs actions de solidarité contre cet acte de censure, ca m’a vraiment fait chaud au cœur. Je suis très fier de cette réaction de nos jeunes tunisiens qui veut beaucoup dire pour moi et qui démontre qu’il y a toujours de l’espoir.

Je ne suis pas un opposant, je ne suis pas un activiste. Je suis un technologiste, un père, un entrepreneur et un immigré. Mes notes ont été toujours représentatives de ce que je vis ou de ce que je crois juste ou de ce que j’ai lu ailleurs et que je trouvais assez pertinent à partager. Pour cela je suis devenu un fantôme !!

المؤتمر نت - نانسي عجرم المؤتمرنت/ وكالات - قالت صحيفة تونسية إنّ رجلاً تونسيا اكتشف عادات غريبة لدى حماره الذي لا ينام إلاّ على السرير، ويقضي أوقات فراغه في تدخين النرجيلة على أنغام موسيقى الراي الجزائرية، وأغاني المطربة اللبنانية نانسي عجرم. ونشرت صحيفة الشروق التونسية تحقيقاً مصوراً مع الحمار وصاحبه، اللذين يعيشان في مدينة قصر هلال، شرق تونس.

ونسب لصاحب الحمار قوله في الخبر الذي نشره سي.إن.إن، إنه اكتشف أن حماره يهيج طربا ما أن ينبعث صوت نانسي عجرم، أو الفنان الجزائري الشاب خالد عبر المذياع.وأضاف أنه كان يعتقد بادئ الأمر أنّ حماره أصيب بالجنون قبل أن تتكرّر العملية أمامه، الأمر الذي جعله مقتنعا أنّ حماره يحب موسيقى الراي، لأنّه يعود إلى طبع الحمير رصينا وهادئا، وذلك عندما تنتهي وصلات الموسيقى.

A Lesson Of Democracy.

I heard that Frederico Mayor Zaragoza, the ex director-general of UNESCO was invited to the RCD “colloque” organized during the 7th November celebration. It seems that he kept praising Bourguiba, Med Ali Charfi and never mentioned the current president which left all the attendees frozen in their seats, not even exercising their favorite sport, applauding.

So I tried to find his speech on the net, unfortunately I could not. But I found another one he made back in 11/7/1992 and I loved it. I find it an answer to many posts and comments on the Tunisphere in the last couple of weeks. A lesson on democracy.

Here is a the introduction of the speech:
'Justice should always come before charity', as Malebranche so rightly said in his Treatise on Morality. Charity is a last resort that is appropriate only in the absence of justice. Humanitarian action, however necessary and however generous, is clearly an acknowledgement of failure[...]

I have recently been rereading 'Al-Muqadimmah', the introduction to the Discourse on Universal History by Ibn Kaldun, and more than one passage struck me by its profound relevance to the present. Allow me, to quote a short extract to you:
'Treating pupils unjustly and with brutality is likely to make them weak and prone to lying and hypocrisy. Through fear of punishment they hide what they really think. They lose those feelings most deserving of the term "human" and fall a prey to others (...). Le miracle Tunisien.

J’étais assis dans l’avion sur le siège à côté de la fenêtre. Je n’arrêtais pas de penser à ce que je venais de voir à l’aéroport de Roissy Charles-de-Gaulle, ou je venais de changer d’avions pour ma destination finale, Tunis. Presque la moitié du Terminal 2F est alloué à Tunis Air, 24 vols par jour Tunis-Paris et plusieurs pour Monastir, Tozeur, Tabarka et Djerba. Pas moins de 12 avions passagers Tunis-Air sur le Tarmac et autant de 747 cargo portant l’enseigne de cette société qui parait-il est privée maintenant. Le personnel jeune et dynamique orchestrant ce flot de voyageurs et marchandises comme une montre suisse. Les deux jolies hôtesses au comptoir de mon vol étaient un exemple de professionnalisme et de politesse. L’une d’elles portait un voile rouge qui lui allait à merveille et qui parait-il fait partie d’un de l’uniforme officiel de la compagnie tout en étant optionnel. Je n’en revenais pas !!

Dans l’avion, tout les passagers disposaient d’une TV LCD, encastrée dans le siège de devant comme dans les avions a long et moyens courriers. Je mets la télé, je zappe, il y a tellement de chaines Tunisiennes que je commence à me demander si je ne rêve pas. L’une d’elle s’appelait TNN et diffusait de l’info en continu. Je tombe au milieu d’un segment parlant de l’arrestation d’un haut fonctionnaire pour corruption. Il avait un lien de parenté avec un des ministres du gouvernement ce qui a déclenché automatiquement la création d’une commission d’enquête sur la possibilité de complicité par ce ministre !!!. Le plus beau c’est que le présentateur parlait en Tunisien de chez nous et non en arabe litteraire. Il expliquait qu’il ya quelques fonctionnaires qui n’ont pas encore réussi de se débarrasser de l'ancienne mentalité et qu’il faut être diligent et reporter ce genre d’affaires et juger les coupables sévèrement, pour se débarrasser une fois pour toute de ces pratiques qui dieu merci sont exceptionnels de nos jours.

Mon voisin, remarquant la tète que je faisais et ma bouche grande ouverte, me demande si je connaissais ce mec. Je lui réponds par la négative et que ma surprise était dans ce que je voyais et lui demande si c’est vrai ou de la comédie qu’ils font a la télé. Il sourit et me dit que ca se voit qu’il ya longtemps que je n’ai pas visité le bled ni suivi ce qui y se passe. Et il commence à m’expliquer que le pays n’est plus ce qu’il était, que la Tunisie est le nouveau dragon économique qui monte de jour en jour. Le système et les mentalités ont changés, tout est optimisé pour le succès. Les cafés ferment et se convertissent en librairies, salle de spectacles, théâtres et bibliothèques. Ils n’ont plus de clients depuis qu’on a éradiqué le chômage. Tout le monde a un travail en Tunisie et on importe la main d’œuvre de nos pays voisins et même de l’Europe pour soutenir notre croissance. Le gouvernement est moins présent dans l’économie, il s’occupe du social et de l’infrastructure publique et de créer le Framework juridique dans lequel les entreprises privées et publiques évoluent et surtout oeuvre pour assurer le succés de nos entreprises qui lui assurent un revenu fiscal necessaire pour maintenir et améliorer l'infrastructure existante. Je devais avoir une face qui lui a fait comprendre que je ne croyais pas un mot. Il me dit d’attendre pour voir, au moment de la descente de l’avion pour m’apercevoir moi-même qu’est ce qui est devenu des endroits comme Douar Hicher ou la cite Ettadhamen. Il m’étonne encore plus quand il me dit qu’il ya maintenant plus de 100 journaux et revues de différentes tendances représentants les différents partis politique et la société civile et qu’il ya autant de titre arabe, français qu’anglais. Que l’anglais est devenu la deuxième langue de l’enseignement et que le français est toujours obligatoire dans les dernières classes secondaires. Que, Que….etc..

Au moment de la descente, je regarde par la fenêtre et ne crois pas ce que je vois, des villes nouvelles et modernes avec des grattes ciels et une symétrie parfaite a l’américaine ont poussées sur la côte et a l’intérieur on peut apercevoir les complexes industriels et les usines. Et puis tout autour, que ce soit les collines ou les vallées, tout était vert.

La vue du port de Tunis me rappelait le port de Los Angeles, les porte containers les plus grands du monde étaient a port en attente de charger la marchandise tunisienne vers les quatre coins du monde. Pendant la dernière boucle avant l’atterrissage, je m’aperçois en effet que ces quartiers populaires comptant chacun plus de 200000 habitants sont transformés en quartiers résidentiels, on dirait la banlieue de San Francisco, avec un traçage et lotissement parfait, quelques maisons avaient même des piscines. Je n’ai plus aucun doute maintenant, le miracle économique est bel est bien la devant mes yeux.

Apres l’atterrissage et pendant le taxi, je vois une file d’avions devant nous qui viennent d’atterrir sur une des quatre pistes de l’aéroport, d’autres formant une queue pour décoller, des avions et des buildings a perte de vue !! On y est, la porte de l’avion s’ouvre directement sur un tapis roulant qui va jusqu'aux guichets de la police des frontières. Je ne reconnais rien de l’aéroport, on dirait l’aéroport de Frankfurt. Une structure moderniste, des vitrines partout ou sont exposés des tableaux en mosaïque de 3000 ans à cote des derniers gadgets électroniques et mécaniques produits par nos usines. Pas de photo de quiconque qui nous sourit, a part celle d’un modèle qui vante les produits d’une de nos banques d’investissement, pas de banderole du parti vantant le progrès et le changement. C’est vrai qu’on n’a pas besoin d’une banderole pour nous vanter le progrès et l’infrastructure, on peut se rendre compte nous même de cela !

On s’arrête devant les guichets de la police de la frontière et la je commence à voir l’organisation automatique des gens en file !! Impossible !! Un vieux touriste européen a voulu resquiller et tout le monde gentiment lui a fait comprendre qu’il fallait faire la queue comme tout le monde. Ca allait très vite, le policier prend le passeport, le scanne et vous le rend avec un sourire et un bienvenue en Tunisie qui m’a fait chaud au cœur au point de ne pas retenir mes larmes de bonheur. Les gens démontraient un dynamisme inhabituel pour moi, que ce soient les employés ou les passagers tunisiens qui ressemblent a tout cadre européen qui a hâte de rentrer chez lui apres avoir accompli une mission pour son employeur. Personne ne te dévisageait et même si par hasard son regard tombe sur toi, il sourit !! Pas de bousculade, pas de chaos, on se croirait en Suisse. Les gens parlaient entre eux a vois basse. Ils étaient tous polis et civilisés. Il n’y avait que moi qui regardait de l’un a l’autre, voulant leur demander si je faisais partie de la camera cachée du siècle. Non, je suis bel et bien en Tunisie, l’amour de ma vie, comme j’en ai toujours rêvé. J’attends impatiemment d’être avec ma famille pour en savoir plus et aller visiter ce pays que je ne reconnais plus.

Soudain une sirène d’alarme vient de se déclencher, tout le monde fait semblant de ne pas l’entendre, j’étais le seul à avoir paniqué, ma vue commence à devenir flou, je perdais conscience. J’entends une voix avec un ton exaspéré, je ne vois plus rien, je sens mon corps qui tremble, on dirait un tremblement de terre, je me sens secoué.

J’ouvre les yeux....

Mon fils est devant moi qui commence à s’inquiéter « Papa qu’est ce qui t’arrives, il ne reste plus que 10mn avant qu’ils ferment la porte de l’école, réveille toi ! »

Tunisia: Medical Tourism.

It really seems that medical sector in Tunisia; specially the private one is performing very well and is an example of a development success story. It started with expanding to North African countries like Libya and Algeria and now the growth is coming from Europe. From Thalasso therapy complex to private clinics building a worldwide reputation in all kind of surgeries, the most lucrative being the plastic ones. Nipping, lifting, tucking, breast enlargement.. Just name it.

Melinda Tricoli sits beaming with joy in a four-star Tunisian hotel after an operation to flatten her stomach.

"I'm so happy. I feel up with the angels. It's spotless, a job well done," she enthuses.

Tricoli caught a plane from her native France to Tunisia after a botched job by a French surgeon left her with three lumps on her stomach.

"It was a nightmare. I thought I'd never have a flat belly. Now everything is OK, I'm going to enjoy myself and visit a few sights, even if I have to walk slowly."

The north African country received 6.4 million holidaymakers last year, bringing in 2.56 billion dinars ($1.98 billion).

"A traditional tourist spends between 300 and 400 euros during his stay," Ben Yeder said. "But a medical tourist spends 2,500 to 4,000 euros at least."

The industry is still small -- some 200,000 people have plastic surgery in France each year, while Tunisia drew just 500 foreign tourists for surgery last year, 80 percent of them French -- but expectations are high.

"If we manage to get 5,000 to 10,000 people every year, this will be an extraordinary industry," said Ben Yeder.

What is still behind is the service in public hospitals. Form hearing stories from different sources, it seems that public hospitals are still lagging in quality. I can’t find an explanation to this, since the majority of our doctors are formed in such hospitals, and some of them practice in both private and public sectors, is it a problem of doctor ethics or is it an administrative one? How come that, the same doctors who thrive and perform above average in private clinics can be part of such horror stories we hear happening in public hospitals?

I myself had a very good experience a few years ago. My son had to perform an emergency appendicitis. I took him to El Manar private Clinic and it was one the best medical experience I have ever had. We were taken care of professionally from the time we stepped inside. After the diagnostics, the pediatric surgeon on call came in less than 15 mn (it was 3:00 AM). They prepped him and proceeded with the surgery in less than 2 hours. It was a total success and the scar left on his tummy is now almost invisible. His pediatrician here was amazed by the quality of the surgeon. She told me even in the US, few surgeons will have left him with a so tiny scar. I was really proud. I always believed in the Tunisian competency, it is just the system that is preventing us from thriving!!!!

N’est-il pas ironique qu’un blog appartenant à un MOUWATEN TOUNSI (citoyen Tunisien), soit censuré en Tunisie. Qu’un site au nom de TunisNews.net le soit aussi??

Ce symbole du citoyen qui n’a pas le droit de s’exprimer et de l’information qui n’a pas le droit d’exister. Cela veut tout dire et il n’y a rien à ajouter !!

Je me demande jusqu'à quand cela va durer, c’est tellement désolant que cela devient frustrant et honteux!! On est tous fiers d’être tunisiens, mais notre fierté ne sera jamais complète tant qu’on subit ce genre de pratiques. Je n’arrive pas à croire qu’il n’y a pas quelqu’un dans la sphère du pouvoir qui pense que ces pratiques ne servent à rien sauf qu’à nous amener de la mauvaise publicité. C’est tellement évident !!!!

Que faire ? Est-ce qu’il vaut mieux se taire ?

La Censure ne sert à rien.

Ces dernières semaines, le problème de la censure en Tunisie était un sujet largement discuté sur les sites et les blogs tunisiens. J’ai donc décidé d’y contribuer par cette note.

Je commence par la censure de l’internet qui est officiellement légalisé par nos lois qui interdisent la circulation de contenu pornographique, considérée comme atteinte aux bonne mœurs et a la moral publique, ou le contenu qui porte atteinte à la sécurité et l’ordre publique. Jusque la, c’est tout à fait légal, car théoriquement notre législateur est élu par le peuple et ces lois reflètent le désir de celui-ci. Donc pour appliquer ces lois l’ATI qui est l’organisme propriétaire des routeurs par qui transite toute l’information digitale, a le droit d’appliquer les lois en cours en bloquant les sites pornographiques ou les sites jugés dangereux pour notre sécurité nationale.

Je comprends pour le porno, mais comment et qui juge le contenu pour le libeller dangereux pour la sécurité nationale ? Est-ce qu’il y a des agents du ministère de l’intérieur qui ont ce droit de laisser passer ce site et non l’autre ? Et sur quels critères se basent-ils. La constatation générale est que tout cite qui représente un courant politique non reconnu ( n’ayant pas reçu le visa de parti officiel) est automatiquement censuré, tout site de news qui reprend des articles d’opposants tunisiens ou articles de presse critiquant le pouvoir est censuré et que tout site qui expose ces pratiques de censures tels que reporter sans frontières ou Human right watch est censuré.

Je suis désolé mais je ne vois pas en quoi Tunisnews.net ou rsf.org sont dangereux pour notre sécurité nationale et puis les censurer ne veut pas dire qu’ils n’existent pas, au contraire, cela leur donne plus de notoriété et donne beaucoup de crédibilité a leur contenu. Pourquoi avoir peur qu’un Tunisien lise ce que dit Amr ou Zaid qui s’oppose a la politique du pouvoir, et de toute façon avec le téléphone arabe tunisien, tout finit par parvenir a ce tunisien, mais parfois c’est tellement déformé et exagéré que c’est mieux de donner l’accès a la source.

Je conseille vraiment aux autorités à reconsidérer cette décision, et de commencer par donner accès à quelques sites d’oppositions et d’y participer eux même pour répondre et donner leur point de vue. Il faut qu’on apprenne à accepter la critique. J’aime bien les ouvertures qui se font au niveau sportif et culturel, alors pourquoi avoir peur ?

Le deuxième sujet c’est la censure de la pièce de Fadhel Jaibi qui d’après ce que j’ai lu sur les sites censurés en Tunisie n’est pas du tout nuisible a la sécurité. Une pièce de théâtre ne créera pas une révolution. Regardez les pièces de Adel Imam en Egypte, depuis plus de 25 ans elles critiquent ouvertement le pouvoir en place. Cela n’a jamais fait que créer des fous rires, ca n’a jamais été dangereux pour qui que ce soit, le pouvoir est toujours la et le président est toujours le même.

Cette censure n’a aucune raison d’être et elle nuit à l’image de notre pays et au gouvernement plus qu’autre chose. En plus elle est inefficace car elle produit l’effet contraire a celui recherché, qui est qu’on en parle pas !! Je conseille a nos responsables d’essayer de faire des petites ouvertures ici et la et qu’on s’habitue tous petit a petit à discuter nos différences et éviter ces mesures d’une époque révolue et en plus il y a et il y aura toujours des moyens pour contourner la censure.

Les medias se sont par contre tous mis d’accord pour couvrir les protestations au Liban, l’arrestation de 160 militants de Al Qaeda en Arabie Saoudite, le fait que Rumsfield dit en privé le contraire de ce qu’il dit en public et que Fidel Castro est trop malade pour assister a son 80eme anniversaire.

Hamza El Din (1929-2006)

I was very surprised when I received an email from one of my engineers asking if I know a lute player called Hamza El Din. His own words were "Have you heard of Hamza El’Din, the great oud player?”

I really felt embarrassed that this young American from Chicago, IL knows this guy and I don't. Especially when he told me "I can’t stop listening to one of his most recent releases. He incorporates Arabic, Nubian, and western music’s".

So I am really curious to know if any of you have ever heard about this musician ?

Today is the official World AIDS Day. A day meant to remind us that even with the medical progress made in the fight against this pandemic, people are still getting infected. Some because of their life style, unprotected sexual relations, syringe exchange. Others are infected through sexual violence. And many children are infected because of mother-child transmission or because they are in the care of an infected parent.

During 2005, an estimated 700,000 children around the world were newly infected with HIV. More than 80% of these infections occurred in sub-Saharan Africa, although Asia and the Caribbean are also seeing increases in the number of children infected with HIV. This pandemic is changing the life of millions of children in Sub-Saharan Africa. Le mouton de l’Aïd aux USA.

Je viens de découvrir que le mouton Tunisien est un animal fort apprécié aux US. En effet il s’avère qu’il y a une race qui s’appelle « American Tunis sheep » qui a été importé de Tunisie au 19eme siècle. Il parait même que le président Thomas Jefferson, auteur principal de la déclaration d'indépendance et un des pères de la constitution américaine en était un des importateurs !!J’étais agréablement surpris par cette nouvelle jusqu’au moment ou j’ai appris que cette race et a été mélangé avec des races européennes pour l’améliorer et faire réduire la graisse de la queue (Elliyya). Un crime pour tout Tunisien qui se respecte :-).

The Tunis is one of the oldest breeds indigenous to the United States. It is a medium-sized meat-type sheep characterized by creamy wool, copper-red colored faces & legs, pendulous ears, and minor fat deposits over the dock area.[...]

The earliest documented importation occurred in 1799. They came as a gift to the U.S. from the ruler of Tunisia, his highness the Bey of Tunis, and were entrusted to the care of Judge Richard Peters of Pennsylvania who became an outspoken advocate of the breed. Démocratie et Religion.

Depuis des décennies, plusieurs pays justifient le fait de ne pas implémenter un système démocratique transparent par la peur de mettre au pouvoir un parti qui va a l’encontre de la sécurité nationale du pays !!! Cette justification est bien sûr adressée aux grandes démocraties de ce monde qui leur demandent qu’ils permettent à leur peuple de s’exprimer et avoir un droit de vote sur les lois qui régissent leur vie.

Bien sûr et on le sait tous que la vrai raison est de se maintenir au pouvoir à vie, mais beaucoup de pays occidentaux paraissent donner raison a ces dictatures, surtout après le 11 septembre et le dernier essai fait par Bush en Palestine (et en Egypte) et qui a abouti a des islamistes dans le gouvernement et ceci fait peur a certains

Au fait, même en étant conscient de la mauvaise fois de ces gouvernements, je suis tout à fait d’accord qu’un parti politique ne doit pas être basé sur la religion, mais pas pour les mêmes raisons.

Un parti doit être basé sur un ensemble de valeurs humaines, sociales et économiques auxquelles peut s’identifier n’importe quel citoyen, qu’il soit homme, femme, noir, blanc, musulman ou athée. Limiter un parti aux personnes pratiquant la même religion, c’est comme le limiter à ceux qui sont de la même race ou du même sexe et cela à mon avis est aberrant. On peut être libéral et musulman ou conservateur et juif, l’un ne doit pas exclure l’autre. Au fait je trouve que cela est dangereux car implicitement celui qui est opposé a un parti religieux va avoir un sentiment de culpabilité et de peur alors qu’il est un adepte de la même religion que les membres de ce parti. Implicitement il va y avoir des handicaps sérieux à discuter n'importe quel sujet puisque les lois divines peuvent être interprétées de mille manières et elles sont surtout indiscutables, on doit les appliquer ou on va en enfer (religions monothéistes) !!! Vous voyez bien à quel genre de débat cela peut aboutir.

Personnellement je trouve que démocratie et religion ne se mixent pas bien. On peut dans une nation démocratique s’inspirer de valeurs culturelles ou religieuses, mais construire une société moderne basée sur l’interprétation par quelques uns de la religion, c’est une tache qui me semble être vouée à l’échec. La religion doit rester au niveau individuel.

Je suis musulman mais je ne veux pas militer dans un parti politique musulman. Les musulmans doivent être représentés dans tous les partis (quand ils existeront), comme les femmes, les hommes, les blancs ou les noirs.

De toute façon, cette discussion est un peu préliminaire vu l’état des lieux de ces pays vis-à-vis de la liberté d’expression et l’encouragement du débat :-(

Iraq conflict a civil war -- a decision that put it at odds with the White House and that analysts said would increase public disillusionment with the U.S. troop presence there.

NBC, a major U.S. television network, said the Iraqi government's inability to stop spiraling violence between rival factions fit its definition of civil war.[....]
Several analysts said NBC's decision was important as the administration would face more pressure to pull U.S. troops out of Iraq if the U.S. public comes to view the conflict as a civil war.

"That does change the terminology and is likely to change the perspective of viewers, and one suspects other media outlets will sooner or later follow suit."

The best offer to the Palestinians [at Camp David in December 2000]--by Clinton, not Barak--had been to withdraw 20 percent of the settlers, leaving more than 180,000 in 209 settlements, covering about 10 percent of the occupied land, including land to be "leased" and portions of the Jordan River valley and East Jerusalem.

The percentage figure is misleading, since it usually includes only the actual footprints of the settlements. There is a zone with a radius of about four hundred meters around each settlement within which Palestinians cannot enter. In addition, there are other large areas that would have been taken or earmarked to be used exclusively by Israel, roadways that connect the settlements to one another and to Jerusalem, and "life arteries" that provide the settlers with water, sewage, electricity, and communications. These range in width from five hundred to four thousand meters, and Palestinians cannot use or cross many of these connecting links. This honeycomb of settlements and their interconnecting conduits effectively divide the West Bank into at least two noncontiguous areas and multiple fragments, often uninhabitable or even unreachable, and control of the Jordan Valley denies Palestinians any direct access eastward into Jordan. About one hundred military checkpoints completely surround Palestinians and block routes going into or between Palestinian communities, combined with an unaccountable number of other roads that are permanently closed with large concrete cubes or mounds of earth and rocks.

There was no possibility that any Palestinian leader could accept such terms and survive, but official statements from Washington and Jerusalem were successful in placing the entire onus for the failure on Yasir Arafat[....]

In April 2003 a "Roadmap" for resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was announced by U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan on behalf of the United States, the United Nations, Russia, and the European Union (known as the Quartet).The Palestinians accepted the road map in its entirety but the Israeli government announced fourteen caveats and prerequisites, some of which would preclude any final peace talks[....]

International human rights organizations estimate that since 1967 more than 630,000 Palestinians (about 20 percent of the total population) in the occupied territories have been detained at some time by the Israelis, arousing deep resentment among the families involved. Although the vast majority of prisoners are men, there are a large number of women and children being held. Between the ages of twelve and fourteen, children can be sentenced for a period of up to six months, and after the age of fourteen Palestinian children are tried as adults, a violation of international law[...]

The United States has used its U.N. Security Council veto more than forty times to block resolutions critical of Israel. Some of these vetoes have brought international discredit on the United States, and there is little doubt that the lack of a persistent effort to resolve the Palestinian issue is a major source of anti-American sentiment and terrorist activity throughout the Middle East and the Islamic world[...]

The bottom line is this: Peace will come to Israel and the Middle East only when the Israeli government is willing to comply with international law, with the Roadmap for Peace, with official American policy, with the wishes of a majority of its own citizens--and honors its own previous commitments--by accepting its legal borders. All Arab neighbors must pledge to honor Israel's right to live in peace under these conditions. The United States is squandering international prestige and goodwill and intensifying global anti-American terrorism by unofficially condoning or abetting the Israeli confiscation and colonization of Palestinian territories.

Q: In your book, you argue that ‘because of powerful political, economic, and religious forces in the United States, Israeli government decisions are rarely questioned or condemned.’ Can you explain that more fully?

A: I’ve been all over the Holy Land, I’ll call it, just for a kind of a shorthand description, since the 1970s — the last 30 or 40 years — from Lebanon down to the Sinai. And I’ve been up into the Golan Heights three times, and I’ve conducted three elections there — and I’ve seen the coverage given to Israel’s activities in Europe and in Israel itself — a highly contentious debate over [Israel]. There is no such debate in the United States. There’s not any debate in the Congress. There’s not any debate in the White House, at least since George Bush Sr. and I were there, and in the news media of the United States there is very rarely any editorial comment that would criticize some of the practices of Israel which I consider to be deplorable — and that is the persecution of the Palestinians, and the occupation and confiscation and the colonization of Palestinian land. So there’s no open debate in this country if it involves any criticism of the policies of the Israeli government, even though many people in Israel debate and condemn some of the policies of the right-wing governments under Sharon and Netanyahu and others.

Q: Lately there has been a lot of discussion about the role of the ‘Israel lobby.’ Can you say a little bit about how that impacted you as president? Has it changed over time?

A: Well, I think the Israel Lobby — so-called to use your phrase, that’s not my phrase — is much stronger now and much more effective now than it was when I was in office. I felt, for instance, that we should sell F-16 airplanes to Saudi Arabia so Saudis could defend themselves against threats from Iran, and Aipac and others were adamantly against it, but we finally prevailed. And I called within three months of when I went into office for a Palestinian homeland. And I worked for the Camp David accords, which called for Israel’s political and military withdrawal from the occupied territories, and so forth, and I think that that kind of independence was also exhibited by George Bush Sr., who condemned Israeli settlements in the West Bank and even withheld funds from Israel, which I never did, by the way.… That’s almost an impossibility now in the present political environment of America.

The roadmap to nowhere.

Tanya Reinhart is a professor at Tel Aviv University and the University of Utrecht. She is author of Israel/Palestine: How to End the 1948 War (Seven Stories Press, 2002) and The Road Map to Nowhere: Israel/Palestine Since 2003.

Israel backed by mainstream Western media - describes its war against the Palestinians as a war of defence, a necessary response to Palestinian terror, a noble instance of the global war against terrorism. It is amazing how still now, after two years of massive Israeli destruction of the Palestinian society, so little is known about the real facts of how this war developed, and what Israel's role in it is[....]

Ever since the Palestinian territories were occupied in 1967, the Israeli military and political elites have deliberated over the question how to keep maximum land (and water) with minimum Palestinian population. A simple solution of annexing the heavily populated Palestinian land would have created a "demographic problem" - the fear that a Jewish majority could not be sustained. Therefore, two basic approaches were formed. The Alon plan of the Labor party proposed annexation of 35-40 percent of the territories, and either a Jordanian rule, or some form of autonomy for the rest of the land, to which the Palestinian residents will be confined. In the eyes of its proponents, this plan represented a necessary compromise. They believed it would be inconceivable to repeat the "solution" of the 1948 Independence war, when much of the land was obtained "Arab-free", following mass expulsion of the Palestinian residents. The second approach, whose most vocal spokesman was Sharon, strived to get more. In its extreme realization it maintained that it should be possible to find more acceptable and sophisticated ways to achieve a “1948 style" solution. It would only be necessary to find another state for as many Palestinians as possible. "Jordan is Palestine" was the phrase Sharon coined in the 1980's.[...]

Amid the propaganda, a theme that had already emerged in October 2000 was the analogy linking present circumstances to the war of 1948. Major General Moshe Ya'alon, then deputy chief of staff (and the present chief of staff), explained that "this was Israel's most critical campaign against the Palestinians, including Israel's Arab population, since the 1948 war - for him, in fact, it is the second half of 1948" (Amir Oren, Ha'aretz, November 17, 2000). After two years of brutal Israeli oppression of the Palestinians, it is hard to avoid the conclusion that the leading military and political circles in Israel that produced this analogy still believe that "the second half" - a completion of the ethnic cleansing that started in 1948 - is necessary and possible.

What kind of people have we become?

We take our breakfast and enjoy our morning coffee while reading or watching the news of hundreds of Iraqis, being blown off by some suicide bomber whose act is supposed to free his country from the

occupation. And then we kiss our wives goodbye and drive to work enjoying our favorite music (George Michael’s for me). During lunch break, we eat a sandwich while surfing the news sites, looking at dead bodies and torn cars and bloody scenes and then go back to work. We’ve been immunized against pain and we got used to injustice, we’re loosing our humanity, we accepted the fact that Iraqis, Palestinians, Sudanese have a different destiny then ours. They die, we watch!

This is what we became, even the Americans who ask for US withdrawal, they do it to save US soldiers life and US money not for the poor Iraqis who are supposed to be free now, enjoying democracy paid by Uncle Sam.

It is as if we’re watching a big reality show, where children, women and men die because of decisions of some lunatic politicians who are telling us that they made it their job to change the world and make it a better place for all of us. BS!!

Isn’t so obvious that the war in Iraq is wrong? Why don’t we leave these poor people live and enjoy their life the way they want it, raise their kids and build their country their way, the same way we do. How can they dare, stand in front of cameras and tell us that this is the right thing to do, and that they’re dying for their own good!!

Isn’t so obvious that the people of Palestine are suffering from injustice and cupidity? Isn’t so obvious that it is time they have their own state? Don’t they deserve to live in security, the same way most of us do? How can they dare explain to us that they deserve this life (or death)!

Why is it that power falls always in the hand of unwise people, blind people, cupid and idiots? Even democracy is failing preventing these aggressions. The US government is staying in Iraq against the will of the majority of US voters, why? Why do the Israelis believe that they are better fighting the Arabs than cooperating with them? Why is it that these leaders who wanted to fight for the freedom of Iraq and liberating it from Saddam, don’t do the same thing for Sudan, or North Korea or a lot of these poor countries in Africa who are still fighting for food and water? Why do they think that we are idiots and will believe such lies? At least during the colonization era, the British or the French were not hiding it that they need these countries for their own use. Now they achieve the same thing by making us believe that they are helping.

Today 150 died and 300 got wounded in Iraq. 3800 died in October, 3300 in September, 3000 in August. 60000 civilians died form violence, more than 500,000 died from the effect of the war on the country infrastructure. A country is losing its population, its history is being looted, thousands of historical artifacts thousand years old are lost, and one of the seven world wonder is being a world blunder. Enough is enough! Stop helping them, leave them alone! Mr. Bush, it is a civil war that you created all right! So at least don’t insult us by saying it is not.

I think we do owe these people an apology, in the form of bringing to justice whoever is responsible for this mess. Whoever opened this Pandora box that is spreading death and misery should be held responsible for his acts.

CIVILIANS VIOLENTLY KILLED: October (3,709), September (3,345), August (3,009), July (3,590).

PROFESSIONAL TARGETS: Assassinations of professionals continued at an alarming rate in the past two months, including journalists, teachers, professors, lawyers, doctors and political and religious leaders.

DISPLACED PEOPLE: An estimated 1.6 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries since 2003. An estimated 418,392 people have been displaced by sectarian violence and 15,240 by military operations since Sunni-Arab insurgents bombed a Shiite shrine in Samara on Feb. 22, 2006. An estimated 100,000 people per month have left Iraq in the past few months.

DETAINEES: At the end of October, there were 29,256 detainees in Iraq, about 46 percent held in coalition facilities and 54 percent in Iraqi prisons.

TARGETED SCHOOLS: Schools have increasingly become a target for sectarian and other criminal attacks. More than 300 teachers and Ministry of Education employees were killed and 1,158 wounded in 2006 alone.

Le pourquoi et le comment?

Pourquoi dans certains pays arabes on n’a pas le droit de critiquer sans être assimilé à un traître et si c’est un étranger qui le fait, on le traite de colonialiste. Si quelqu’un s’aventure à critiquer, au lieu de débattre et essayer de trouver une solution, on commence à sortir les arguments du genre « Il ne faut pas généraliser, c’est une exception » « pourquoi on ne parle que des mauvaises choses, on n’est pas si mauvais que ca ! » « Ces trucs existent partout » « tu n’aimes pas ton pays, tu es un vendu »

Bien sur qu’il ne faut pas généraliser, mais il faut pointer du doigt ce qui ne marche pas. C’est comme ca qu’on se rend compte qu’il faut le réparer ou au moins essayer. Si a chaque fois que quelqu’un parle d’un problème, on lui dit qu’il ne faut pas généraliser, le problème ne sera jamais résolu, n’est ce pas ? Et puis si on a peur pour sa réputation, il n’y a qu’à travailler dur pour éviter qu’il y ait des problèmes.

Et puis c’est tout à fait naturel de discuter ce qui ne marche pas, et non de ce qui fonctionne correctement, car ce dernier est la norme! Quand quelqu’un fait son travail c’est normal, quand une institution exécute et atteint ses objectifs c’est normal, quand on fait ce qu’on est supposé faire, c’est normal !!!Ce n’est pas un exploit. Si on n’arrête pas d’en parler, notre crédibilité va en souffrir et cela tourne parfois au comique. A lire les éditoriaux des journaux de quelque pays arabe, tout est bien, toute les institutions sont excellentes et tout le monde est content. Je me demande pourquoi quelqu’un serait intéressé à lire cela. C’était plus simple d’écrire un seul mot « RAS » ou rien à signaler !

Et puis si on est aussi parfait que cela, tout le monde doit le savoir et tout le monde doit être choqué de lire quelqu’un qui critique ce système parfait. Malheureusement, la majorité tend à être d’accord (secrétement) que le problème existe et c’est tant mieux car c’est déjà mieux que de le nier, ce qui n’avance point les choses et n’aide pas au développement.

Et puis arrêtons de nous comparer qu’aux pays qui sont moins performant que nous, c’est la mentalité des perdants. Comparons nous aux grands de ce monde, acceptons le challenge, travaillons dur pour s’y rapprocher et se comparer a eux. Le système académique est le même dans le monde entier, et grâce a l’internet on a accès aux mêmes informations et connaissances. Arrêtons d’accepter l’aide de ces pays qui nous donnent de l’argent souvent sous forme de prêt et nous obligent a acheter leurs produits ou services. Un exemple, pourquoi le système d’eGovernment tunisien doit être fait par les italiens. On ne doit accepter leur aide financière que si elle est inconditionnelle. On a assez d’ingénieurs et de compétences pour développer ce genre d’infrastructure, ce n’est pas une centrale nucléaire, c’est du logiciel et ils ne sont pas meilleurs que nous dans ce domaine.

Acceptons le défi, éliminons les obstacles. Exposons les problèmes, parlons en, faisons participer tout le monde, éduquons nous, changeons notre mentalité de suiveur, voyons grands, soyons ambitieux. Une nation ne peut pas se développer sans l’apport de tout le peuple, on doit tous participer, on doit tous donner notre avis. Un vieux proverbe tunisien dit « Ecoutez les paroles qui vous blessent et n’écoutez pas ceux qui vous flattent ». Comment encourager les gens à participer a tracer leur destinée si on les accuse de trahison !

Qu’est ce qu’il y a de plus normal que de combattre la délinquance, l’absence des valeurs, ou la malhonnêteté ? Pourquoi doit on passer sous silence l’incompétence d’un conseil municipal ou d’un service public ? Pourquoi les journalistes trouvent normal d’insulter un joueur de football ou un chanteur mais n’osent jamais critiquer le travail d’un responsable, si petit soit il ? A la limite ils peuvent parler du problème sans mettre en cause personne, l’exposer, le documenter avec des preuves. Je ne crois pas qu’ils vont aller en prison pour ca. C'est pas la personne qu'on attaque, c'est le problème!

Comment faire bouger les choses, comment se débarrasser de ces obstacles, comment secouer ce système pour enlever les complexes, sans en parler, sans pointer le doigt, sans exposer les maladies et sans dire la vérité et l’accepter ? On doit apprendre à voir la vérité en face, apprendre de nos erreurs et construire sur nos succès. C’est le seul moyen d’évoluer. On doit être libre d’exercer nos droits comme ils sont énoncés dans la constitution de tout les pays arabes.

Parfois on reproche a ceux qui critiquent que c’est contre-productif de critiquer sans proposer de solutions. On oublie parfois que certains problèmes soulevés sont souvent le résultat d’un travail mal fait, d’une erreur de jugement, d’incompétence, d’irresponsabilité ou d’inconscience. Quelle solution croyez-vous doit être adoptée quand une institution ou quelqu’un dans un poste n’est pas capable de faire son boulot correctement? Parfois on critique tout un système et on n’est pas capable individuellement de trouver une solution, doit on se taire pour autant?

Et puis comment changer la mentalité? Est ce qu’on doit demander à tout le monde de changer individuellement pour que la société change? Est ce qu’il doit avoir une incitation et volonté du gouvernement pour encourager le changement individuel? Comment peut on provoquer une prise de conscience générale de la nécessite de ce changement pour qu’on se développe? Comment?

Ah oui, avant de finir. Il ya une autre chose en commun entre ces pays arabes. La plupart perdent beaucoup de temps, d’argent et de neurones pour essayer de balancer entre la religion, la culture et le développement ou a faire semblant de le faire. Moi je crois qu’on doit mettre toutes les ressources disponibles et utiliser tout notre temps et énergie a nous développer et assurer un meilleur futur a nos enfants, qu’on soit musulman, juif, chrétien ou laïque. Qu’on soit fils d’immigrant ou tunisois, du sud ou du nord. La culture et la religion ne sont pas des obstacles, au contraire c’est des éléments motivants qui nous définissent et font partie de soi. Pensons a éliminer cette mentalité de soumis et de perdants et travaillons d’une seule main pour nous et pour nos enfants. Donnons la priorité au développement et si il ya un conflit, je donne la priorité a ce dernier. La culture ou la religion ne doivent pas nous freiner, ce choix est évident pour moi. Une femme peut travailler avec la même efficacité avec un voile, une mini jupe ou même les deux a la fois :-)

The Ethnic cleansing of Palestine...

Indeed, I think that the ethnic cleansing in 1948 will never allow Israel to reconcile with the Palestinians and the rest of the Middle East, nor to live in peace with its own Palestinian minority unless Israel boldly faces the past. The ethnic cleansing included the destruction of more than 400 villages, 11 towns and the expulsion of 750,000 Palestinians.

The Israeli state, as a political entity, has to acknowledge the ethnic cleansing. Until today it had failed to do so and it should be made accountable for its deeds and offer compensation for the people it wronged. This should be done on the basis of UN Resolution 194 that allowed the refugees to choose between compensation and return.

Cinq ans déjà ! Un matin d’automne, le soleil a peine levé, et le téléphone qui sonne. Je n’oublierais jamais cette sonnerie, elle était insistante et alarmante, je me suis réveillé en criant « Baba », j’avais un pressentiment, je décroche, c’était mon petit frère qui s’est porté volontaire pour me l’annoncer. Il ne m’a rien dit, a part «Bonjour », sa voix l’a trahie, je lui demande « c’est Baba, n’est ce pas ? », il me le confirme, je lui demande ‘Quand et qui était avec lui’, il me répond qu’il n y a même pas 10mn et qu’ils étaient tous atour de lui, je lui réponds « sauf moi », la il éclate en sanglots en me disant qu’il était semi conscient jusqu'à la fin et que le dernier mot qu’il a dit avant la chahada, c’était mon prénom…

La relation que j’avais avec mon père était un peu spéciale. De tous mes frères et sœurs, j’étais celui qui a passé le plus de temps avec lui pendant notre enfance. Il aimait les gens et la nature, une personne très modeste mais très respectée dans tout le Rbat de Bab Souika et Bab la3sel et je n’ai jamais compris la raison de tout ce respect avant que mes oncles me racontent ses exploits en tant que militant pour l’indépendance. Il nous l’avait jamais dit et n’a jamais fait d’activité politique depuis, je ne me rappelle pas l’avoir entendu parler politique du tout. Son truc c’était la nature, il connaissait la Tunisie sur le bout des doigts. On a des souvenirs de balade et de campings mémorables. C’est lui qui m’a appris la plongée et qui m’a fait visiter les plus belles plages de Kelibia, de Bizerte et Tabarka. J’étais son préféré. Quand il avait des soucis ou était un peu sur les nerfs, il venait me proposer de sortir voir un film ou aller a la pêche..

Et puis a 23 ans je pars, je pouvais voir la tristesse dans ses yeux, son regard qui me demande si c’était vraiment nécessaire de partir ? Il n’est jamais resté plus de 6 mois sans me voir, si je ne viens pas en Hiver, c’est lui qui vient.

Je me rappelle ses larmes de joie quand il a tenu son petit fils pour la première fois, il ne voulait le rendre à sa mère. Je me rappelle de son sourire, un sourire de quelqu’un qui est fier. C’était quelqu’un qui parle peu mais tu pouvais tout lire dans ses yeux.

Je me suis rappelé tout ca en sautant d’un avion à l’autre pendant cette course contre la montre, car je voulais le voir une dernière fois avant l’enterrement. Je suis arrivé à temps. L’émotion créé par mon arrivée était a la limite du supportable. Au fait je suis un sosie de mon père, au niveau du look et manières. Pour mes oncles et tantes et même ma mère, en me voyant c’est comme s’ils le voyaient lui 30 ans en arrière et ca a toujours été bizarre pour moi. Ce jour la c’était tuant, ils étaient tous la quand je suis rentré et en me voyant, ils voulaient tous me prendre dans leurs bras, les sentiments de tristesse et de tendresse se mélangeaient. Je ne voulais pas pleurer, je voulais les consoler, je voulais prendre sa place mais je n’ai pas pu.

Je l’ai vu une dernière fois avant qu’ils ne le sortent de la maison, je lui ai donné une bise sur le front en lui demandant de me pardonner pour n’avoir pas été la.

J’étais impressionné par le nombre de personnes qui étaient venu au cimetière, je savais qu’on avait une grande famille mais pas tant que ca, beaucoup d’amis qui ont vu l’annonce dans la presse. Mon père était du genre, tu le vois une fois, tu l’aimais et c’est ce qui explique le nombre d’amis qu’il avait.

Je n’ai laissé personne le descendre dans sa dernière demeure, je l’ai fait moi même aidé par mon petit frère chéri et qui après moi était le plus proche de lui. J’ai les larmes aux yeux depuis ce matin en me rappelant de toutes ces scènes, il y a cinq ans.

Obstacles au développement (ma version).

Dans la série de notes de mon ami Tarek, on a eu à discuter plusieurs obstacles qui selon lui sont les plus importants à franchir pour accomplir le développement du pays.

Tout le monde ne voit pas les choses de la même manière. Je vais essayer dans cette note de décrire les vrais obstacles au développement comme je les vois moi même. Notre expérience et vécu font qui on est, et comment on perçoit les choses. On commence avec des préjugés et des notions acquises à travers notre éducation, milieu et culture. Puis le processus cognitif fait qu’on corrige les notions qui sont prouvées fausses et confirment celles qui sont prouvées juste.

Pendant 18 ans (8 en France, 10 aux USA), j’ai travaillé avec des personnes de toutes nationalités que ce soit en France, aux US ou dans les dizaines de pays que j’ai visité pour des raisons professionnelles. La Tunisie, je la visite une a 2 fois par an et elle est toujours dans mon cœur et je me suis toujours considéré un de ces citoyens et fils mais je n’y ai jamais travaillé, non pas par choix, mais par un concours de circonstance très long a expliquer ici.

Personnellement les obstacles pour moi sont la mentalité du tunisien et le système politique qui l’exclut de tout débat, et peut être que le premier est le résultat du deuxième.

Les lois qui nous ont été imposées et on été comiquement débattues par les représentants du peuple (parlement) qui le moins qu’on puisse dire sont loin de le représenter. Je ne veux pas m’attarder sur ce sujet car je suppose qu’on est tous assez intelligent ici. Le Tunisien subit et ne participe jamais dans les débats de sociétés inexistants qui doivent être une des sources de notre législation. Les parlementaires sont issus d’un seul parti (omis une vingtaine) et le débat au sein de ce parti est limité a un groupe très réduit et donc même les adhérents de ce parti subissent et ne débattent pas. Avant le changement l’UGTT était une force politique jouant le rôle d’opposition et avait une base populaire assez importante ou les travailleurs pouvaient essayer de changer et influencer les lois. Après les émeutes de 1984, même l’UGTT est devenu un satellite du parti au pouvoir créant un vide. Le mouvement estudiantin qui était le cœur battant de la société civile est lui aussi quasi inexistant.

Le Tunisien n’a pas de contrôle sur sa vie, la société civile est à l’image du gouvernement. Bref le législateur n’est pas l’écoute du peuple, le judiciaire n’est pas indépendant et souffre d’interventionnisme et l’exécutif n’est pas au service du peuple, ils ont d’autres chats à fouetter. Essayer d’appeler les flics pour leur signaler une activité illégale !! Bref comment apprendre à respecter les lois, si ceux qui doivent le faire respecter ne le font pas. Je me rappelle, j’avais 18 ans, voyageant avec mon frère en Allemagne. J’étais devant l’auberge ou on est descendu, attendant qu’il me rejoigne, j’étais assis sur le capot d’une voiture, chose qui m’était tout à fait naturelle. Même pas 5mn et 2 voitures de flics étaient la, ils m’on fait expliquer que la voiture était une propriété privée et s’assoir dessus sans l’autorisation du propriétaire était interdit !!!! Eh ben je ne me suis jamais assis sur une voiture depuis.

Le manque de contrôle sur sa vie et le vide civique crée un sentiment d’injustice et de non appartenance qui va engendrer un comportement et une mentalité décrite dans les quelques exemples suivants qui sont les vrais obstacles au développement.

Le respect des lois et le respect tout cours :On ne paie pas les impôts que si c’est retenu a la source, on fait tout pour détourner les lois et le système, la justice ne s’applique pas de la même manière a tout le monde, les formalités de n’importe quel démarche est inconnu, le processus n’est pas le même pour tout le monde, pas de prédictibilité du tout dans le fonctionnement de ce système. Bref le Tunisien est le champion du système D, des qualités qu’on acquiert que si on a vécu pendant longtemps dans le système et ceci élimine des gens comme moi.

On voit tous des automobilistes garer leur voiture en double file en plein avenue de Paris, conduire leur voiture en état d’ébriété totale, conduite agressive et parfois criminelle, ne pas respecter une simple file d’attente ou un feu rouge.. Bref on se fait ses propres lois et on ne pense qu’a soi. Je ne sais pas si c’est de l’égoïsme, impatience, un sentiment d’injustice qui nous pousse à ne penser qu’à soi et après moi le déluge. On n’a jamais appris comment une société civile moderne et libre fonctionne, chacun fait ses propres lois. N’empêche que ce manque de respect de la loi, est partout, pauvres ou riches, éduqués ou non, et devient normal au point qu’on ne se rend pas compte qu’on le fait. Récemment, sur un des blogs tunisiens l’auteur invitait ces lecteurs à cliquer sur les ads de Google pour collecter l’argent pour une bonne cause. Je suis sûr de leurs bonnes intentions et qu’ils ignorent que c’est illégal, preuve que ce genre de comportement est devenu normal, alors que pour quelqu’un vivant a l’étranger, cela saute aux yeux qu’il ne l’est pas.

Ce comportement transposé au monde professionnel est néfaste puisqu’il n ya plus de règles de jeu, ajoutant le fait que pour faire une démarche quelconque on se croit obligé d’avoir besoin d’une intervention, poussant les entrepreneurs à tisser un réseau de connaissances rien que pour se protéger et pouvoir faire du business. En ne respectant pas les lois, on ne se respecte plus et on crée un système de lois parallèles basées sur des pratiques mafieuses qui découragent l’entrepreneuriat. Il est évident que de telles pratiques existent dans tout les pays mais ca reste une exception pour eux, alors que c’est la règle ici et le nier ne résoudra pas le problème

Partout dans le monde, les employés des administrations du service public sont moins efficaces que les employés du secteur privé, chez nous en plus de cela ils se sont mis d’accord à être tous impolis, agressifs et méprisant. Ceci s’explique par le peu de pouvoir qu’ils ont sur nous pour mettre un tampon sur un papier ou nous donner une autorisation ou information quelconque. Encore ce sentiment du soumis qui veut se convaincre qu’il est important. Ajoutons à cela l’insatisfaction de ces employés et le combat qu’ils doivent mener pour survivre et la frustration d’un travail qu’ils sont obligés de faire, faute de trouver mieux. Les employés ne sont pas épanouis, ils sont maltraités par leurs managers et ils maltraitent les citoyens ou clients. Le service privé est un peu mieux, mais la aussi on trouve des gens casés avec un salaire et des avantages non négligeables comme dans les banques et les assurances, mais qui ne foutent rien a part attendre l’heure de rentrer chez eux, aucune ambition, aucun épanouissement, est ce la faute de leurs managers ou de l’organisation ? Je n’en sais rien.

A part quelques exceptions, les sociétés tunisiennes ne se soucient guère de leur réputation, qu’il y ait des clients insatisfaits ou frustrés ne les empêche pas de dormir. On dirait qu’ils rendent service au client en acceptant de lui vendre leurs produits. S’il ya un problème quelconque c’est le client qui doit subir SAUF s’il fait intervenir quelqu’un qui puisse le lui régler. Je n’arrive pas à comprendre comment ils peuvent réussir avec une telle mentalité. On la trouve dans les grandes entreprises comme chez les commerçants ou les professions libérales, un produit défaillant est la responsabilité du client, on le rend pas, on ne l’échange pas. Si tu donnes une avance à un artisan avant qu’il commence son travail, il risque de ne pas venir sans se soucier une minute de sa réputation ! Cette mentalité est un obstacle au développement, car une entreprise pour réussir a besoin de beaucoup de services et doit faire confiance a un réseau de sociétés ou individuels avec qui on peut faire des affaires en toute confiance.

La vision courte des entrepreneurs : Tous les projets qui se font sont à la recherche d’un profit dans un temps record. J’ai même entendu parler des cas qui montent des dossiers pour le financement d’un projet d’Hôtel, prennent un crédit, construisent l’hôtel tout en détournant une part pour se construire une maison et acheter une belle voiture. Apres quelque mois, on arrête de payer ses traites mensuelles et on déclare à la banque que l’hôtel est en difficulté profitant de l’aide du gouvernement dans ce secteur. C’est vraiment des pratiques mafieuses.

Les plus honnêtes cherchent à s’enrichir au détriment de leur réputation en offrant un service ou produit lamentable. Peu sont qui pensent a long terme et acceptent le fait qu’on doit investir du temps et de l’argent dans un projet et exécuter un plan bien étudié avant qu’il commence a porter ces fruits. Je me rappelle dans la première startup qu’on a faite, on a accepté des projets de 3 a 6 mois qu’on a fait gratuitement, oui contre $0. Quand on est petit et inconnu, on n’a pas de références, et le seul moyen d’en faire c’est en perdant de l’argent dessus, mais en gagnant la référence du client, assumant qu’on est capable de faire un travail de haute qualité. Voila encore une mentalité qui nous manque.

Le manque de confiance : Les pratiques évoquées ci-dessus vont automatiquement engendrer un manque de confiance qui va peser lourd dans le monde des affaires et ne va pas encourager celles-ci, créant un autre obstacle au développement.
Je ne vais pas m’attarder sur la corruption, les pratiques mafieuses de quelques familles ou autres. Je veux tout juste préciser que même si ce genre de pratique existe partout dans le monde, ce n’est pas a la même échelle que dans notre pays et que c’est pas acceptable que ce soit chez nous ou ailleurs. On peut toujours s’adapter a ce système sans essayer de changer les mentalités mais il ne faut pas s’attendre a des miracles.

Enfin Il faut aussi avouer que par rapport a d’autres pays on est bien loti, et qu’on a tout les moyens de réussir si on peut se débarrasser de cette mentalité, la preuve est que les Tunisiens qui vivent à l’étranger s’en débarrassent facilement e réussissent aussi bien que les natifs. Notre éducation est compétitive, ils ne sont pas plus intelligents que nous et on n’est pas aussi mauvais qu’on paraisse l’être. C’est un système et surtout une mentalité qu’il faut s’en débarrasser.

Pour des professionnels comme moi non accoutumé à de tels systèmes, je trouve que c’est presque impossible de faire du business dans ce contexte. Pour y réussir il faut des qualités et une mentalité que je n’ai pas et que beaucoup d’immigrant ayant vécu longtemps loin de la patrie n’ont pas aussi. Cette décision émane de mon expérience et ce genre de décision ne peut pas se prendre en se fiant à l’expérience de quelqu’un d’autre. Je ne cherche pas une justification et je suis prêt a tout pour voir cette mentalité disparaitre mais pour le moment, je ne peux pas tout juste l’ignorer, ce serait un manque flagrant de professionnalisme ! N’oublions pas que la mission d’un entrepreneur est de maximiser ses chances de succès tout en minimisant ses risques d’échec !

The Israeli-Palestinian conflict is dragging for 60 years now. What started as land occupation is turning in a religious war. Two generations from both sides were raised in the hatred and the war. Both “countries” have been led with warriors, none of them was willing to give peace a chance.

What started as a result of a war, resulted in wars. The Exodus or the Jew immigration to the Promised Land accelerated exponentially with the raise of the Nazi power and then the WWII. The 1947 UN partition plan giving 55% of the Palestinian land to Israel is perceived by the Israelis as a right given to them by a body representing the whole world, while for the Arabs it was just plain occupation, resulting in the 1948 Arab-Israeli war. Since then, it never ended. Israel aggressively seeking to establish itself as a power in the region, never negotiated any issues, believing that it will be a sign of weakness. For the Arabs, it was arrogance and provocation and then the religion got in the middle making it impossible to think of peace.

Up until 5 years ago, any peaceful Israeli or Palestinian was considered a traitor by his own people. Anouar Sadat paid that with his life and so did Yitzhak Rabin.

I was raised hating Israelis and Israel. I could not pronounce it, for us it is Palestine. I still hate and disapprove what the Israeli government is doing but I don’t believe anymore in the war and the violence. If this conflict is going to end anytime soon, it will be through peaceful, wise people. Israel government is wrong in keeping with his non negotiation policy, it is wrong in fearing developed Arab countries as neighbors and is wrong in the flexing muscles policy aimed at making it feared by its neighbors. The Arabs are wrong in making it a religious issue and in going for the Eye for an Eye solution.

The good news in all this is that few voices of reason start to be echoed on both sides. People wise enough to see that the only way is to forget about the past and start a new chapter where we go back to live with each other in respect and peace. Israel need to go back to its pre 1967 border and help its neighbor’s development since it is its only way for peace. Palestinians need also to forget all this injustice and rebuild a country where they could live and let live.

Many Israelis are trying to get their wisdom voice heard among all these war goers. Following are some excerpts of an article from Gideon Levy ,an Israeli reporter in the Haaretz, an Israeli daily newspaper with a liberal editorial line and fervent supporter of the Oslo Accords. I try to follow articles from Amira Hass and Gideon Levy who are part of these voices of the wisdom.

In this article Gideon was reporting on the last drama of Beit Hanun and on Islam Al-Atamna (aka Asma Al-Atamna) , the 14 years old girl who lost 18 members of her family.I consider him a voice of wisdom because he is a reporter whose humanity doesn't allow twisting the truth.

This is Islam al-Atamna. A girl of 14. She is sitting in her black mourning clothes. Eight close relatives - including her mother, grandparents, uncles and aunts - were all killed before her eyes, one after the other. They were killed in the street after they awoke at home in horror at the sound of the first shell that exploded and then fled outdoors, where the next shells caught them. About 11 fell on a residential neighborhood, one shell a minute, a rain of death, pursuing them in their flight. Fatherless for some time already, the girl is left alone in the world with her two little sisters and her 3-year-old brother Abdullah, whose legs were severed and who is hospitalized in the Al-Hilal Hospital in Gaza.

What should we say to Islam? What can we say to Islam? That the chip in the radar system is to blame? That the electronic component is responsible? Perhaps that the Palestinians are to blame?

On the fourth floor, in the apartment of the family of Amjad Al-Atamna, where two shells fell on two children's rooms, tearing not-very-large holes in their ceilings, signs of the killing are still in evidence. The children were crushed here to pieces by the shells that landed on their heads while they were sleeping the peaceful sleep of little children. The Arabic notebook of Khalil Al-Atamna, wrapped in a cover with colorful cartoons, is among the ruins. Kahlil is hospitalized in serious condition. A third shell hit the wall of the stairwell, killing a mother and her two daughters while they were fleeing. The three were catapulted from the stairwell into the street.

The white IDF reconnaissance balloon looks down from the sky straight into the yards of the homes on this street. Did the balloon record the horror? Didn't they see up there what the Artillery Corps was doing for about 15 minutes?

The second example of ultimate voice of wisdom is form someone who suffered a direct strike of this non sense and still preaches peace. For those who looked at this tragedy and felt hate and felt like going kill some jews, please read this as reported here by the same newspaper.

Tahani Atamna, whose son Mahmoud, 12, was killed in the shelling, clutched her son's geometry book. "He was number one in his class. The best student," she said.

Three of her other children - Khaled, 7, Khalil, 9, and Khulud, 13 - are unwilling to return home, she added. "Yesterday, we brought them here with two psychologists. But they started to cry and said that they don't want to die. The whole family went. All those who remain are wounded in body or soul."

"I don't wish any Jewish mother to go through what I'm going through, this disaster of seeing her son die before her eyes," she continued. "I only hope that we will be the last victims of this war."

Nor did other family members sound hungry for revenge. "I don't want this to happen to anyone in the world," said Riad Atamna. "Not to Jews, not to Christians and not to Muslims. Enough blood. Enough."

I know that my post is in disagreement with the arab public opinion but my convictions lay in the fact that peace and forgiveness are the solution. Now call me a dreamer, an idealist, that would be a compliment :-)

Still recovering from a wide corruption scandal that tarnished its image in 2000, LAPD is facing more troubles with a case of police brutality. A video taken by a witness and published to youtube.com led to the arrest of these 2 cops.

Some people are not mature enough to deserve the legal tools of power that are given to them. Abuse happens all over the world. Some get caught like here; some are still there waiting for the next victims.

Such cops do not belong to the community of 400,000 police officers enforcing local, state and federal laws and sometimes going in harm’s way in order to do so. More than a hundred of them get killed a year in this line of duty.

It is amazing how some visionary people can predict or see through the cloud of current events. Georges Orwell in his “1984” fiction book described through the story of a couple of lovers how the world would be in 1984. The book was written in 1946, just after WWII and the start of the cold war era.

The deception, the totalitarianism, the despotism, the Big Brother concept, the population surveillance, the spinning of the news, the rewriting of history by governments to suit its politics, justifying the unjustifiable…etc. On all this, Orwell was right on.

And I am not talking here about governments of banana countries, I am thinking about the current administration of the USA, headed by President Bush.

I talked about one of the aspects of news spinning and truth twisting in a post, a couple of days ago. In the same series, I want to share with these blunders made by Bush’s administration.

1) Iraq war spending:
SIGIR, the special inspector general for Iraq reconstruction, is a body created by US congress to oversee the spending of over $3 billion of taxpayer’s money on Iraq reconstruction. This team audited hundreds of projects saving around $400M. It investigated 243 cases of abuse or embezzlement that sometimes resulted in arrest and jailing of such wrong doers. It also issued reports criticizing the white house effort of reconstruction.

I guess Bush’s administration did not like seeing these contractors having tough time trying to get the money, so in mid September, he instructed republicans in the congress to slip a small provision in a military bill they are working on, that would close this office by 10/07. They did, it passed and he signed it. A lot of congressman did not know that the just did that until 2 days ago! The new democrat led senate just introduced a bill that would extend the SIGIR mission beyond 2007. The fact that a lot of this

2)Bush Internment camps
In January 2006 Homeland Security awarded a $385 million contract to Kellogg, Brown and Root, the subsidiary of Halliburton Co., to build "temporary detention and processing capabilities" aka “internment camps” in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs. 3) On October 17, 2006 Bush signed the Military Commissions Act (MCA). This law was barely covered in the US and it breaks all the rules of civil and human. Under the MCA the president or the secretary of defense can declare any person US citizen or not an "enemy combatant" who can be jailed, has no right to an attorney and can even be tortured. Jail time in unlimited!!!! Is this constitutional? You understand now how right was Orwell in “1984”.

4)In the same Military bill used in (1), republicans buried deep down the hundreds of acts, sections and titles a small provision that give full power to the president to use the state national guards, which in the US is normally equivalent to a state martial laws, since that’s the only time where state soldiers report to the president instead of their governor. Some call this a mini coup. This information was not mentioned in any newspaper and it came to light through blog rumors. A journalist took the time to check and confirm it. I did the same exercise by checking the congress site, and found it here, look for Title V, Subtitle B, section 531 :-). So now soldiers can be used on the US soil at any time, peace or war, whenever the president or the secretary of state requires it.

Darfur, the forgotten...

Almost 3.4 million, equivalent of half the population of Sudan is affected by the Darfur drama. 1.3 million children were displaced and live in camp. The UNICEF is overwhelmed and NGO efforts are hindered by the continuous violence. A trap for a million of children who if they make it to be adult, will be marked forever by this experience. And the whole world is watching.....

An estimated 3.4 million people—equivalent to almost 51 percent of the total population in the region—have been affected by the crisis in Darfur. At least 1.3 million children are living in 200 refugee camps as a result.

Darfur's children have borne the brunt of this ongoing conflict. They live in a constant state of fear, according to UNICEF Emergency Communications Officer Gordon Weiss. "They have lost their homes and their families and suffered terrible abuses," he said

In recent weeks, increasing violence has made it extremely difficult for humanitarian workers to continue to effectively respond with needed relief. Acute malnutrition has reached 27 percent in some parts of Darfur and health care systems are failing. Sexual violence against women and children is as widespread as ever, and people yearn for a place where they can feel safe.

The world cannot and should not allow this senseless loss of life to continue. We call upon all parties to cease the conflict and protect the families and children.

Mr. Bush’s covert propaganda.

I stumbled across a year old article in NYT about the Bush administration and the propaganda machine they built using our tax dollars. I heard last year about Armstrong Williams, the reporter who got paid $241,000 by the department of education in order to praise Bush’s education policy. But I was never aware by the extent of this unethical and misleading approach.

In fact it seems that the US government through dozens of its agencies is becoming a rival to Hollywood producers by producing fictions or fake reports concerning many subjects, even false interviews!!!! These pre-packaged news report are given to TV producers for free who under pressure of budget or for other unethical reason broadcast it as if it is exclusivity and never mention the origin of these reports!!!

Here are a few excerpts from the article:”Under Bush, a New Age of Prepackaged TV News”

It is the kind of TV news coverage every president covets.

"Thank you, Bush. Thank you, U.S.A.," a jubilant Iraqi-American told a camera crew in Kansas City for a segment about reaction to the fall of Baghdad. A second report told of "another success" in the Bush administration's "drive to strengthen aviation security"; the reporter called it "one of the most remarkable campaigns in aviation history." A third segment, broadcast in January, described the administration's determination to open markets for American farmers.

To a viewer, each report looked like any other 90-second segment on the local news. In fact, the federal government produced all three. The report from Kansas City was made by the State Department. The "reporter" covering airport safety was actually a public relations professional working under a false name for the Transportation Security Administration. The farming segment was done by the Agriculture Department's office of communications.

Under the Bush administration, the federal government has aggressively used a well-established tool of public relations: the prepackaged, ready-to-serve news report that major corporations have long distributed to TV stations to pitch everything from headache remedies to auto insurance. In all, at least 20 federal agencies, including the Defense Department and the Census Bureau, have made and distributed hundreds of television news segments in the past four years, records and interviews show. Many were subsequently broadcast on local stations across the country without any acknowledgement of the government's role in their production.

Local affiliates are spared the expense of digging up original material. Public relations firms secure government contracts worth millions of dollars. The major networks, which help distribute the releases, collect fees from the government agencies that produce segments and the affiliates that show them. The administration, meanwhile, gets out an unfiltered message, delivered in the guise of traditional reporting.

Confronted with such evidence, most news directors were at a loss to explain how the segments made it on the air. Some said they were unable to find archive tapes that would help answer the question. Others promised to look into it, then stopped returning telephone messages. A few removed the segments from their Web sites, promised greater vigilance in the future or pleaded ignorance

The explanation begins inside the White House, where the president's communications advisers devised a strategy after Sept. 11, 2001, to encourage supportive news coverage of the fight against terrorism. The idea, they explained to reporters at the time, was to counter charges of American imperialism by generating accounts that emphasized American efforts to liberate and rebuild Afghanistan and Iraq

United States law contains provisions intended to prevent the domestic dissemination of government propaganda. The 1948 Smith-Mundt Act, for example, allows Voice of America to broadcast pro-government news to foreign audiences, but not at home. Yet State Department officials said that law does not apply to the Office of Broadcasting Services. In any event, said Richard A. Boucher, a State Department spokesman: "Our goal is to put out facts and the truth. We're not a propaganda agency."

Tunisie: appel de parlementaires au président Ben Ali pour qu'il se représente à l'élection de 2009

TUNIS (AP) - Des parlementaires tunisiens ont appelé l'actuel président Zine El Abidine Ben Ali à renouveler sa candidature aux élections prévues en 2009 pour briguer un cinquième mandat de cinq ans, a-t-on appris samedi de source officielle.

Le ministre d'Etat Abdelaziz Ben Dhia, porte-parole officiel de la présidence de la République, a fait état de communiqués publiés dans ce sens par la Chambre des députés et la Chambre des conseillers (Sénat).

Tout en appuyant cette proposition, "témoignage de reconnaissance pour les acquis enregistrés en Tunisie grâce à sa politique judicieuse et éclairée", M. Ben Dhia, un proche collaborateur du chef de l'Etat, a déclaré que "la décision définitive relève cependant des seules prérogatives du président de la République".

Selon la première commission du Sénat, un nouveau mandat devrait permettre à l'actuel président de "poursuivre la conduite de la Tunisie vers davantage de progrès et d'invulnérabilité".

M. Ben Ali avait accédé au pouvoir en 1987. Il avait démis l'ancien président Habib Bourguiba (84 ans) dont il était le Premier ministre pour "sénilité" sur la foi d'une attestation signée par six médecins jugeant "le père de l'indépendance" dans l'incapacité de continuer d'assumer les charges de l'Etat.

Après avoir aboli la résidence à vie instituée par son prédécesseur, il modifia de nouveau la Constitution par voie référendaire en 2002 pour supprimer la limitation du nombre de mandat présidentiel fixés à trois dans un premier temps.

Le nouvel amendement a repoussé en même temps l'âge limite pour un candidat à la présidence de 70 à 75 ans. M. Ben Ali qui aura 73 ans en 2009, avait été élu lors de ses quatre mandats avec plus de 99% des voix, sauf en 2004 où le scrutin lui a donné plus de 94% des suffrages.

Lors des deux premières élections (1989 et 1994), il était candidat unique du parti au pouvoir, le Rassemblement constitutionnel démocratique (RCD), avant d'instituer le pluralisme des candidatures présidentielles qui ont permis à des dirigeants de l'opposition de briguer la magistrature suprême lors des scrutins de 1999 et 2004. Water kills 5,000 children a day!!!

Some of us think that global warming, changes in weather patterns, the ozone layer and the environment problems in general are just an exaggeration of scientists and an issue for intellectuals in need of causes to embrace. Some think that environment problems are good problems since they mean development. The truth is that these problems can cause more than flooding, hurricanes or other natural wrath resulting in hundreds of victims. The truth is that it could be responsible for the death of 2 million of our children a year or 5,000 a day. Take a moment and think about that number, because it really needs your full attention. Unfortunately, the victims here are generally very poor kids, living in countries that never make the news but when a celebrity actor or singer brings his TV crew to cover his charity work or adopt one of them.

The UN through its development program just published its 2006 Human Development report focusing on the problem of the water. It states that 2,000,000 children die a year from infected water and sanitations problems, that 1.2 billion of the world population don’t have access to safe water and 2.6 billion without access to sanitation!!!!! And we dare talk about globalization...

Millions of women and young girls are forced to spend hours collecting and carrying water, restricting their opportunities and their choices. And water-borne infectious diseases are holding back poverty reduction and economic growth in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Beyond the household, competition for water as a productive resource is intensifying. Symptoms of that competition include the collapse of water-based ecological systems, declining river flows and large-scale groundwater depletion. Conflicts over water are intensifying within countries, with the rural poor losing out. The potential for tensions between countries is also growing, though there are large potential human development gains from increased cooperation.

The Human Development Report continues to frame debates on some of the most pressing challenges facing humanity. Human Development Report 2006:

• Investigates the underlying causes and consequences of a crisis that leaves 1.2 billion people without access to safe water and 2.6 billion without access to sanitation
• Argues for a concerted drive to achieve water and sanitation for all through national strategies and a global plan of action
• Examines the social and economic forces that are driving water shortages and marginalizing the poor in agriculture
• Looks at the scope for international cooperation to resolve cross-border tensions in water management
• Includes special contributions from Gordon Brown and Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, President Lula, President Carter, and the UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan.

Besides infection, the water is a source of bigger problems, which could cause the striving to death of whole populations. It is really hard to grasp the extent of this problem.

We are all fed up with governments restricting freedom of speech or encouraging corruption and we all neglect and never talk about other actions that are more basic. I really hope that we all start at least to feel the importance of such tragedy and do whatever we can at our level to help. This could be just by making people aware it. Water, not oil is the next resource to be worth fighting for!!

In the world's worst slums, people often pay five to 10 times more than wealthy people in the same cities or in London. This is because they often have to buy water from standpipes and pay a middle man by the bucket. "The poorer you are, the more you pay," says Mr Watkins.”

Israel Kills 18 members of one family in Gaza

Imagine this family waking up on the sound of a distant shell explosion, a familiar sound in their neighborhood, so they try to go back to sleep when another shell explodes near their house prompting the mother to get everybody out of the house……

Asma al-Athamna, 14, said her family was awakened early Wednesday by the sound of an explosion and her mother quickly ordered everyone out of the house.
“She was saying, ’There is shelling,”’ Asma recalled.
As the family exited their home, another shell landed, killing the girl’s mother, older sister and brother-in-law.
“They were killed when they came out of our house into the corridor. A tank shell killed them. I was behind them and I was wounded,” the weeping girl said from her hospital bed.
A woman’s headscarf, children’s boots and slippers, and a pair of jeans - all burnt - were strewn outside the houses.
Khaled Radi, a health ministry official, said all the dead belonged to the same family. More than 50 people were wounded, 14 of them seriously, Radi said.

Her name is Asma, she's 14 from Gaza, Palestine and she just lost 18 members of her family today, including her mother and her older sister!!! Asma did not choose her parents, her country and cannot make yet any decision regarding her life. Who should we blame???

IDF is denying
A military spokeswoman said artillery rounds had been fired at Palestinian rocket-launching sites, but far from the apartment compound.

But the Israeli government expresses regret but feel pressed to continue "military operations" on similar houses
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert expressed regret over the deaths and, along with Defense Minister Amir Peretz, offered “urgent humanitarian aid” to the Palestinian Authority and immediate medical treatment to the wounded.
Israel halted artillery attacks in Gaza while it investigated the incident, but said it would press forward with operations meant to halt Palestinian rocket fire on Israeli communities.

The palestinian government responsible for the safety of Asma, her family and all citizens issued a statement:

Abbas warned that Israel would have to “shoulder all the consequences for these crimes,” and Haniyeh said the Palestinians reserved the right to “self-defense.”

Hamas being the major party in the government had also to issue a statement:
“The truce (with Israel) ended at the end of 2005,” Mashaal told a news conference in the Syrian capital. “The armed struggle is free to resume, and the resistance is dictated by local circumstances.”

“America is offering political, financial and logistic cover for the Zionist occupation crimes, and it is responsible for the Beit Hanoun massacre. Therefore, the people and the nation all over the globe are required to teach the American enemy tough lessons,”

Unfortunately, for Asma this won't be the end of her tragedy, and we won't have time to imagine what her life would be now, because this is the start of a cycle of violence where Asma's family members are just statistics

The killing of Palestinian civilians in the past has often preceded a sharp escalation of violence. A series of deadly incidents last summer, including a June 9 explosion on a Gaza beach that killed eight civilians, was followed by the capture of an Israeli soldier and an ensuing Israeli invasion of Gaza.

It's been a long time since I gave up thinking of how this conflict would end. There is so much hate involving that it would take a miracle to achieve peace in this part of the world. It is just hurting to see a child go through this knowing that soon another child on the other side will go the same experience. We will say they deserve it, and they would say we deserve it. None of us is right when children are dying. I will feel the same way is this child was Israeli. I think with age and with experience of parenting, I learned to see things from a different perspective, a more human one. I understand the reactions of some of us who say "they have what they deserve", I used to think like that, not anymore. Now when I hear someone glorifying violence acts, Israelis or Palestinians, it makes me smile unless there are children involved.

I am sure, I am able to kill someone to protect my child in a direct physical confrontation, I see that as a duty, but I will never kill for revenge or as preventive measure. Instead, I will spend all the time I have left and all the resources I have, to get whoever did this crime in front of a court of law. But that's me and whoever read my posts and my comments would know by now that I am an idealist, yet I understand realism and abide by it.

US Midterm elections.

Democrats sweep Governor’s races 28 to 22, house races 229 to 196 and currently lead the senate race 50 to 49 with a lead in the remaining (Virginia) where there could be a recount.

After 12 years in minority, the democrats are back in control of the house that will be led by the fist woman speaker of the house, Senator Nancy Pelosi from California. Senator Hilary Clinton from NY, won by almost 70%, confirming herself as a serious presidential candidate in 2008.

What is very enlightening is that the stock market traded low volume and showed a lot of caution from investors. Corporate America got spoiled under the republicans, with tax cuts, war spending and a good response to their lobby. Democrats will start target Oil Company and investigate the tax cuts they got while enjoying insane profits the last years. Corporate tax loopholes will eventually get addressed.

But, the most important thing to remember is that these elections were a referendum for Bush. Voters for senate and congress were voting for and against Bush and hopefully in the US, the balance is always shifted by the independents (not democrat or republican) who are generally middle class educated people and refuse to vote along party line which in the US is like a religion. US population is 40% always republicans (mostly in Midwest states, rural America), 40% always democrats (mostly in big cities, NY,SF,LA,..) and 20% independents who make their mind according on the current state of the affairs. This makes them the target of the candidates during the campaign. Whoever can convince him that he’ll be better, will win. But if you’re a republican candidate, you’re starting the race with a major handicap…. Bush!

We started to see the result of these elections, by Bush conceding defeat and talking about errors made in Irak. Rumsfield resigning as secretary of defense and new house elected members promising investigations on tons of issues putting Bush in a situation he’s never been in. He was always shielded by the congress and the senate, and I can tell you that we’ll be seeing a lot of comic situations :-)

I still think that this scenario is not as bad as it sounds for the Republicans, specially for the president election in 2008. Because if in 18 months the democrats can’t show sensible improvements on the big issues like Iraq, oil prices, security, there will be an open door for the republicans. In such a period of time and with Bush as president there is no much the congress can do but opposing him on any issue because the senate is almost a tie and a president still has a lot of power on the direction of the country. Bill Clinton spent 6 years as a president with a republican majority but that’s Bill!! So if things won’t change rapidly, the republicans will twist that and use it to get back in business.

So I really don’t have high expectation for the next 2 years. In order to get rid of the perception of arrogance, injustice from the rest of the world’s mind, we need to get a new president in charge and unless there will be impeachment; we’re stuck with the current one.

The only happy republican tonight is the Terminator, Arnold Schwarzenegger who secured his role in the sequel of “Arnold, Governor of California, 2”

First Muslim in the US Congress!!

The state of Minnesota, elected for the first time in the history of the United States, a muslim congressman as their representative!! Keith Elison of Somali origins was born in a catholic family and converted o Islam at age of 19.

Muslim Americans represent 3% or 10 millions of the population, only 2 millions are registered voters which I think deserves representation. The fact that a muslim gets elected in these time in the US, tells us a lot of things about this country, even though I don't think that politics and religion make a good mix :-)

Even though Elison did not use his faith in his campaign, a lot of muslim americans are expecting that he'll draw attention to muslim problems in the US.

Since the September 11, 2001, attacks by Islamic militants, Muslim-Americans have become sensitized to what many feel is an erosion of their civil rights. U.S. foreign policy that targets Muslim countries also has generated a sense of urgency, experts said.

"(Americans) treat us differently after September 11. My own father was attacked," said Ellison supporter Khadra Darsame, a 1995 immigrant from Somalia. "Ellison said everybody matters equally and he told us what he would do ... he will do the right thing."

Islam et Jihad...

Depuis les attentats de 11/09, le terrorisme en général et le terrorisme religieux en particulier est devenu un sujet populaire, tout le monde en parle, journaux, medias, entre amis ou en famille. Ce mot décrit maintenant, les extrémistes d’Al-Qaeda, les combattants iraquiens et palestiniens, les iraniens et tout groupe ou parti qui pour une raison ou une autre adopte une ligne de conduite basé sur la religion islamique. Tous sont des terroristes et moudjahidin, d’ou la confusion et l’association du mot Jihad au mot terrorisme.

Ici aux USA, même s’il y a eu des efforts de la part de la communauté musulmane et des autorités à prêcher la tolérance et expliquer que l’islam est une religion de paix, il suffit qu’une cassette de Bin Laden ou un de ses acolyte soit diffusée, une vrai ou fausse alerte d’attentat, ou un article quelconque pour tout remettre en cause. Sans oublier la politique du parti républicain qui a gagné les dernières élections en se basant sur la peur et qui a maintenu cette politique jusqu’a aujourd’hui. Les musulmans modérés en ont marre de se sentir coupables et de se défendre et les moins modères se révoltent et commencent à justifier l’injustifiable et a dire que les victimes n’ont que ce qu’elles desservent; ce qui donne à ceux qui veulent faire peur plus de crédibilité et le cercle infernal continue. Tout le monde utilise ces actes et ces réactions pour son propre agenda, à commencer par les dirigeants des pays musulmans, en passant par Israël et les gouvernements occidentaux conversationnistes.

Les populations musulmanes de l’Afrique du nord et du moyen orient ont un tempérament et une culture qui ne permet pas la moindre concession quand on parle de religion. L’Islam étant la dernière religion en date, les musulmans vivent la même époque religieuse que celles des chrétiens au moyen âge, ou la religion est une importante composante dans la vie sociale et politique. Ceci engendre un dialogue de sourd ou pour les non musulmans l’islam est une religion qui incite au terrorisme, ce qui est senti par les musulmans comme une attaque contre leur religion et provoque des réactions démesurées qui encore une fois laissent entendre que les premiers ont raison.

C’est une longue introduction pour une note que j’avais envie de rédiger depuis un moment, sur le Jihad.

Je suis musulman par héritage et par conviction, et j’en suis fier même si je ne pratique pas un des piliers de cette religion qui est la prière. Déjà je sens que je commence à rentrer dans un terrain miné, car pour certains, je ne peux pas être musulman si je ne prie pas! Mais dépassons cela et rentrons dans un terrain encore plus dangereux puisque je vais me permettre de donner ma propre interprétation du mot Jihad d’après mon Ijtihad ou effort de recherche. La aussi il ya une divergence entre les Oulémas. Pour les uns Ijtihad doit être fait par des Oulémas qui connaissent tout sur le Coran et la Sunna et qui rédigent des Fatwas, résultats de leur Ijtihad et qui doivent être obéis. Pour les autres, l’Ijtihad ou devoir de recherche est obligatoire pour tout adulte. Je suis plus convaincu par cette dernière explication, j’aime assumer mes responsabilités et non celle des autres.

Le Jihad est aujourd’hui pour les uns, un concept noble et le plus court chemin au paradis et pour les autres un synonyme de terrorisme. Mais les deux associent Jihad au combat physique et guerre au nom d’Allah. Au fait Jihad et Ijtihad proviennent du même mot (الجُهُد) signifiant effort important, fatiguant. Ijtihad est l’effort de recherche et de déduction. Jihad, est l’effort de lutte ou combat, « struggle or strive» en anglais. Combat ou lutte ne veut évidement pas dire guerre, mais il peut prendre cet aspect .D’après notre prophète Mohamed SAW, c’est un aspect mineur, le majeur étant la lutte de l’âmeجهاد النفس contre le mal et le diable et la lutte pour la diffusion de l’islam جهاد الدّعوة et la aussi ce n’était pas au sens de la lutte armée (القتال). Le vrai Jihad comme le prophète le décrit est le Jihad de l’âme, c’est l’effort qu’on fournit pour faire le bien et éviter le mal, et suivre le chemin de la vérité.

Au fait revenons à l’histoire de la naissance de l’Islam qui a eu deux périodes. La première est Mecquoise et a duré treize ans, du début des révélations à l’émigration du prophète SAWS à Médine; et la deuxième à Médine, qui a duré dix ans.

La période SAWS de Mecque a vu la révélation des sourates qui définissent les piliers et les notions universelles de l’islam. La plupart des sourates s’adressaient a des mécréants "يا أيّها الكافرون..." et évoquaient la notion de la soumission à dieu, de la notion d’enfer et paradis et du jugement final et incitaient les mécréants à se convertir a l’islam. D’autres sourates encourageaient le peu de musulmans de l’époque à diffuser le message de dieu et insistent sur la patience dont doit faire preuve le prophète contre les mecquois qui ne voulaient pas de cette religion. Donc les seules formes du Jihad de cette époque étaient celles de l’âme et la diffusion de la religion.

"الم ,أَحَسِبَ النَّاسُ أَن يُتْرَكُوا أَن يَقُولُوا آمَنَّا وَهُمْ لَا يُفْتَنُون"
"وَمَن جَاهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَاهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ لَغَنِيٌّ عَنِ الْعَالَمِينَ"
"وَالَّذِينَ جَاهَدُوا فِينَا لَنَهْدِيَنَّهُمْ سُبُلَنَا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَمَعَ الْمُحْسِنِين"َ
العنكبوت 1,2,6,69

[29.1] Alif Lam Mim.
[29.2] Do men think that they will be left alone on saying, We believe, and not be tried?
[29.6] And whoever strives hard, he strives only for his own soul; most surely Allah is Self-sufficient, above (need of) the worlds.
[29.69] And (as for) those who strive hard for Us, We will most certainly guide them in Our ways; and Allah is most surely with the doers of good.

Le Tafsir ou explication de ces versets est unanime sur le fait que le Jihad mentionne est celui de l’âme et non la guerre (القتال). Il ya même des Hadiths sur ce sujet quand plusieurs musulmans de l’époque voulaient déclarer la guerre aux mécréants a cause de leur torture et la violence qu’ils subissent mais le prophète SAWS a refusé en leur ordonnant de prier au lieu de faire la guerre.

"كفوا أيديكم وأقيموا الصلاة"

Apres le piège tendu par les Mecquois pour tuer le prophète SAWS et sa fuite vers la Médine, la communauté musulmane est devenu assez importante et les sourates de Coran commencent alors à régir le fonctionnement de cette société, les droits et obligations des uns envers les autres, la femme, le mariage…etc et beaucoup de sourates s’adressent maintenant aux croyants (يا أيّها المؤمنين...).
Cette communauté est devenu aussi en danger et les attaques des mécréants devenaient de plus en plus fréquentes et c’est devenu une question de survie pour les musulmans qui étaient en danger d’extermination et c’est la que la première permission officielle de lutte armée a été donnée.

"يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الشَّهْرِ الْحَرَامِ قِتَالٍ فِيهِ قُلْ قِتَالٌ فِيهِ كَبِيرٌ وَصَدٌّ عَن سَبِيلِ اللّهِ وَكُفْرٌ بِهِ وَالْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَإِخْرَاجُ أَهْلِهِ مِنْهُ أَكْبَرُ عِندَ اللّهِ وَالْفِتْنَةُ أَكْبَرُ مِنَ الْقَتْلِ وَلاَ يَزَالُونَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ حَتَّىَ يَرُدُّوكُمْ عَن دِينِكُمْ إِنِ اسْتَطَاعُواْ وَمَن يَرْتَدِدْ مِنكُمْ عَن دِينِهِ فَيَمُتْ وَهُوَ كَافِرٌ فَأُوْلَئِكَ حَبِطَتْ أَعْمَالُهُمْ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالآخِرَةِ وَأُوْلَئِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُون"َ

[2.217] They ask you concerning the sacred month about fighting in it. Say: Fighting in it is a grave matter, and hindering (men) from Allah's way and denying Him, and (hindering men from) the Sacred Mosque and turning its people out of it, are still graver with Allah, and persecution is graver than slaughter; and they will not cease fighting with you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can; and whoever of you turns back from his religion, then he dies while an unbeliever-- these it is whose works shall go for nothing in this world and the hereafter, and they are the inmates of the fire; therein they shall abide.

[2.217] Ils t'interrogent sur le fait de faire la guerre pendant les mois sacrés. - Dis: "Y combattre est un péché grave, mais plus grave encore auprès d'Allah est de faire obstacle au sentier d'Allah, d'être impie envers Celui-ci et la Mosquée sacrée, et d'expulser de là ses habitants. L'association est plus grave que le meurtre." Or, ils ne cesseront de vous combattre jusqu'à, s'ils peuvent, vous détourner de votre religion. Et ceux qui parmi vous abjureront leur religion et mourront infidèles, vaines seront pour eux leurs actions dans la vie immédiate et la vie future. Voilà les gens du Feu: ils y demeureront éternellement.

"أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى نَصْرِهِمْ لَقَدِيرٌ"

[22.39 Permission (to fight) is given to those upon whom war is made because they are oppressed, and most surely Allah is well able to assist them;
[39] Autorisation est donnée à ceux qui sont attaqués (de se défendre) - parce que vraiment ils sont lésés; et Allah est certes Capable de les secourir -

A cet époque, les gens étaient plus sauvages et agressifs et les guerres étaient atroces, les morts étaient mutilées, les femmes violées et tuées ainsi que les enfants, mais même en donnant la permission de la lutte armée pour la défense de la nation musulmane encore trop fragile, Dieu n’a jamais permis tuer les innocents, ni aucune autre des coutumes courantes a l’époque et a même ordonné le bon traitement pour les prisonniers de guerre qui a l’époque devenaient automatiquement esclaves.

"يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ قُل لِّمَن فِي أَيْدِيكُم مِّنَ الأَسْرَى إِن يَعْلَمِ اللّهُ فِي قُلُوبِكُمْ خَيْرًا يُؤْتِكُمْ خَيْرًا مِّمَّا أُخِذَ مِنكُمْ وَيَغْفِرْ لَكُمْ وَاللّهُ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيم"ٌ

[8.70]O Prophet! say to those of the captives who are in your hands: If Allah knows anything good in your hearts, He will give to you better than that which has been taken away from you and will forgive you, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

[8.70] Ô Prophète, dis aux captifs qui sont entre vos mains: "Si Allah sait qu'il y a quelque bien dans vos cœurs, Il vous donnera mieux que ce qui vous a été pris et vous pardonnera. Allah est Pardonneur et Miséricordieux.

"وَقَاتِلُواْ فِي سَبِيلِ اللّهِ الَّذِينَ يُقَاتِلُونَكُمْ وَلاَ تَعْتَدُواْ إِنَّ اللّهَ لاَ يُحِبِّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ

[2.190] And fight in the way of Allah with those who fight with you, and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits.

[2.193] And fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah, but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors.

Le prophète SAWS était connu pour son pacifisme et conseillait les musulmans d’éviter la guerre et de ne pas la souhaiter

لا تتمنوا لقاء العدو، وسلوا الله العافية، فإذا لقيتموه فاصبروا، واعلموا أن الجنة تحت ظلال السيوف

Je finis par un verset qui contredit l’explication de certains sur le devoir du Jihad.

"وَرَدَّ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا بِغَيْظِهِمْ لَمْ يَنَالُوا خَيْرًا وَكَفَى اللَّهُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ الْقِتَالَ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ قَوِيًّا عَزِيزًا"
الاحزاب 25

[33.25] And Allah turned back the unbelievers in their rage; they did not obtain any advantage, and Allah sufficed the believers in fighting; and Allah is Strong, Mighty.

[33.25] Et Allah a renvoyé, avec leur rage, les infidèles sans qu'ils n'aient obtenu aucun bien, et Allah a épargné aux croyants le combat. Allah est Fort et Puissant.

Personnellement, en lisant ces sourates et en les plaçant dans leur contexte historique, ma lecture est que le Jihad est plutôt la lutte de l’âme, lutte personnelle interne du bien contre le mal. La seule guerre permise était pour sauvegarder l’islam de l’extermination et c’est bien le devoir de tout musulman d’y participer.

Je vous avoue que je ne vois aucun conflit en ce moment semblable a celui qui a opposé le prophète aux mecquois de l’époque, j’en vois pas aussi ou l’islam lui-même est la cible ou est menacé d’extermination. A part la guerre civile dans l’ex Yougoslavie, je ne vois aucune guerre déclaré contre notre religion comme celle des croisades. L’islam est encore une religion qui gagne en nombre. Les conflits palestiniens, irakiens, et autres sont des conflits d’états, de clans et même de race parfois. Le Soudan, je n’ose pas en parler!
Je ne crois pas que le monde va encore vivre une guerre inter-religion, je crois que la seule guerre religieuse possible c’est celle des athées contre les religieux ;-)

Pour être clair, ceci n’est pas un article scientifique, c’est le fruit de quelques heures d’un informaticien qui ignore probablement beaucoup sur les aspects “techniques” de sa religion et qui se contente de simples explications pour se convaincre que sa religion est une religion de paix et de tolérance qui n’incite pas a tuer les innocents. Je suis sur qu’il y a des milliers qui peuvent écrire une note beaucoup plus élaboré et argumentée pour prouver le contraire mais pour le moment je me contente de mes déductions.

Vos commentaires instructifs et tolérants sur le sujet sont les bienvenues. Pour ceux qui se sentent indignés par mon ignorance, sachez que je souhaite être éclairé poliment. Je dis cela car de par ma courte expérience sur la blogosphère, j’ai remarqué que sur toutes les notes traitant de la religion il y a quelque commentaires personnels et insultant de bloggeurs se sentant indignés ou jugeant que la note ou certains commentaires dépassent les limites de l’acceptable. Pour la note, je m’excuse au préalable à tous ceux qui se sentiront indignés par mon ignorance. Pour les commentaires, si commentaires il y a, j’espère qu’ils débattront le sujet et non l’attitude de l’auteur ou des éventuels commentateurs, à se restreindre et à traiter les autres de la même façon qu’ils veulent être traités. Je dis cela par souci d’encourager le débat.

100.000.000 de sites sur Internet!

Quelque part pendant la deuxième moitié d’octobre, quelqu’un a mis en ligne le 100.000.000eme site web. C’est juste un nombre mais il nous fait penser à toute l’information qui devient disponible sur la toile. La toile a ajouté 10 millions de sites en 2 mois et ceci grâce a la popularité des blogs et l’accès a l’ordinateur et l’internet.

L’internet a changé la façon de travailler, d’étudier et de communiquer mais aussi il nous rend, nous bloggeurs sans le savoir responsable d’une tache insoupçonnée que beaucoup entre nous n’y pensent pas et n’y penseraient jamais.

En effet, toutes les notes qu’on écrit, tout les commentaires, les images, les vidéos sont enregistrés, archivés, catégorisés et seront la pour une longue période, pour ne pas dire indéfiniment car je suis sur qu’on va se rendre compte a un certain moment que cela fait partie de l’histoire et qu’on doit les préserver pour les générations futures.

Vous vous rendez compte de la valeur historique de toutes ces notes, dans des milliers d’années quelqu’un les utiliseras pour écrire une thèse ou un livre ou tout juste pour mieux connaître ses ancêtres.

Tout ca pour vous dire de faire attention a ce que vous écrivez ou publiez sur le net :-)

Mais espérons avant tout, qu’on va leur laisser, assez de ressources naturelles, assez de forets, assez d’ozone dans la stratosphère pour qu’ils puissent au moins vivre et étudier nos notes!

George Carlin is one of these comedians who can make you both laugh and feel sad at the same time and this is by just telling the truth. He is one of the few comedians who depicts the average American and the American system as close as it gets and he does that using hilarious and very provocative jokes. I embedded for you his last show “Life is Worth Losing”. As any other provacative comedian, Carlin’s show cannot be broadcasted on the main TV or radio networks because it contains words (used everyday by everyone even by the president) banned by the FCC like shit and f…k, so he got adopted by HBO home for the best comedians in the US. Carlin is a pure atheist, so if you are a believer, open your mind and be prepared to hear jokes that you never thought could be said about religion or god. Be prepared also If you are a proud and patriotic American thinking that America is the home of the free and land of the brave, this can make you mad :-)

Voila mon histoire et je vous demande de m'aider par des conseils

Je suis une jeune fille de 28 ans et je me prépare pour le mariage. J'ai été victime de viol à l'age de 7 ans et j'ai garder le secret toute ma vie car j'avais trop peur des menaces du malfaiteur. J'étais partie amener mon petit frère au jardin d'enfant et c'est sur le chemin du retour qu'un homme qui avait à peu près l'âge de mon père m'a interpelé en cour de route me demandant d'aller appeler une dame de sa part et que je devais le suivre pour qu'il me montre la maison car ne pouvant pas y accéder à cause des parents de la fille. Et moi toute jeune et très naïve j'ai cru à son maudit mensonge et je les suivi. en cous de route j'ai voulu rebrousser chemin mais il a sorti un couteau et m'a menacer de me tuer. Et donc je l'ai suivi. Je me rapelle des moindres détails de ses actes et je sais que qu'il n'a pas pu me pénétrer car je suis parvenu à marcher jusqu'à chez moi sans l'aide de personne. Le fardeau est revenu sur ma tête car depuis cette date je n'ai parler de cela à personne et je ne suis pas allais voir un medecin. Je m'apprette à me marier et j'ai peur de décevoir mon mari car j'ai peur de ne pes être vierge. Depuis cette Date je n'ai pas eu de rapports sexuels avec qui que ce soit. Mais le doute s'impose dans ma tête. Que dois je faire?
J'ai en ce moment Honte d'allais voir un gynéco et j'ai peur de relater l'histoire à mes parents car j'ai peur qu'ils me haissent ...

C’est un fait divers qui hélas devient de plus en plus banal. Fait confirmé rien qu’en lisant les faits divers ou les derniers scandales d’abus d’enfant par les prêtres ou la série de Essabah sur les histoires de prostituées et mères d’enfants fruit d’incestes.

Ce qui m’a touche ici, c’est le fait que c’est la personne elle-même qui en parle et la détresse de ce cauchemar qui la poursuit pendant 21 ans, et surtout qu’elle avait l’âge de ma fille au moment du drame et que celle-ci était en train de faire le singe en face de moi quand je lisais ce post.

je la regardais et j’ai senti mon cœur se serrer et ma gorge se nouer, ma fille a vu cette réaction et s’étonnait et comme tout enfant elle croyait que c’était a cause d’elle, j’ai pas pu m’empêcher de faire l’analogie entre ce sentiment de culpabilité avec celle de cette pauvre fille et j’ai pas pu m’empêcher d’aller vers elle et de la prendre dans mes bras, j’ai senti que c’était elle la victime, ma fille ne comprenait rien a ce qui se passe ainsi que ma femme qui était en train de lire un bouquin quand elle s’est aperçu des larmes que j’avais aux yeux. Je me suis repris, et j'ai embrassé ma princesse. Et aprés l’avoir mise au lit, ma femme m’a demandé qu’est ce qui s’est passé, je lui montre l’article et lui explique. Connaissant ma sensibilité a tout ce qui peut arriver a nos enfants, elle me prend dans ses bras et me dit que je dois arrêter de penser de la sorte et qu’avec la bénédiction de dieu, rien de mal n’arrivera a nos enfants. Je lui chuchote que c’est probablement ce que le père de cette fille pensait et pense toujours. Croyant bien faire, elle me dit “c’est son destin” et “c’est la volonté de dieu”, “rabbi katbelha”. Je lui ai répondu que si elle croit que la volonté de dieu c’est de faire subir des atrocités de ce genre a ces enfants et qu’elle l’accepte, c’est que vraiment elle ne croit pas en dieu!!

Au fait c’est un des rares moments ou j’ai senti que la peine de mort est justifiable, alors que normalement je suis contre. Notez bien dans les propos de cette jeune femme, la peur qu’elle a envers ses parents et son futur mari et la société, et comme elle se sent coupable d’avoir suivi cet homme, qui lui n’a probablement aucun problème de conscience !!!

Bof, un autre fait divers, et je suis sur qu’un autre semblable est en train de se passer en cet instant même. Oui quelque part maintenant, quelqu’un est en train de détruire les rêves d’un enfant innocent, le prince de son père, la perle de sa mère. N’y pensons plus et revenons a nos moutons !!! Je sais, je sais, j’en fais trop, j’espère que j’exagère.

"Borat", A voir absolument !

Borat is the most controversial comic caracter I've ever seen. Created by the british Sacha Baron Cohen in his comedies series "Da Ali G show" on HBO where he acts as a roumnaian or kazak journalist and interview people who are uninformed about his real identity and that results in incredible scenes. I really love that show.

He's been accused of antisemitism, racism and created many diplomatic incidents, check here for more.

His latest creation is a movie called Borat telling the story of a Kazak sent to the US by his governement to learn from the americans, I can't wait to see it.

Stanford School of Medecine researchers found the following:

In the Stanford study—which Aboujaoude said is the first large-scale, random-sample epidemiological one ever done—the researchers conducted a nationwide household survey and interviewed 2,513 adults. Because no generally accepted screening instrument exists for problematic Internet use, the researchers developed their questions by extrapolating from other compulsive and addictive conditions.
The researchers found that 68.9 percent were regular Internet users, which is consistent with previous studies, and that:

* 13.7 percent (more than one out of eight respondents) found it hard to stay away from the Internet for several days at a time
* 12.4 percent stayed online longer than intended very often or often
* 12.3 percent had seen a need to cut back on Internet use at some point
* 8.7 percent attempted to conceal non-essential Internet use from family, friends and employers
* 8.2 percent used the Internet as a way to escape problems or relieve negative mood
* 5.9 percent felt their relationships suffered as a result of excessive Internet use

كتبت هذا النّص من أكثر من شهر علي جهاز ماكنتوش عربي قديم جدّا لم استعمله من أكثر من عشر سنوات وبأنّه لا يمكن الحاقه بالشّبكة المحلّية لم يكن لي سوي أن أنقله علي قرص لسوء حظّي لم أجد عندي أقراص بالبيت، ثمّ اكتشفت أنّ جهازي المحمول لا يحتوي علي قارئ أقراص... فسلّمت أمري للّه ونسيت الموضوع كلّه. لكنّ النّصّ الّذي نشره أديب حول موضوع اللّغة الدّارجة والشّلحة شجَعني علي اقتناء أقراص ولوحة مفاتيح عربيَةّ ونقلت النّص إلي المحمول و ها أنا أستعمل لوحتي الجديدة... و في ما يلي النّص المنتظر....

اشتقت إلي كتابة لغة الضّاد فأنّي لم أمارس كتابتها من أكثر من عشر سنوات.

كان لي معها حكاية طويلة في أواخرالثَمانينات وأوائل التَسعينات أذ كنت أحد أفراد مجموعة من المهندسين والباحثين الَذين صمَّموا وكتبوا أوّل نظام عربي و عبري لجهاز الماكنتوش لشركة آبل كمبيوتر. كان هذا النّظام شامل,يجيد الكتابة و التَرتيب واليوميّة الهجريّة. بعد ذلك اشتغلت لمدّة قصيرة علي الجزء العربي لنظام حروف اليونيكود. أنا متأكَد أنَ قليلا منكم من يعرف أنّ الماكنتوش هو أوّل كمبيوتر فردي في السّوق كان تعريبه كاملا.

نصَّ الموضوع الَذي أريد طرحه اليوم علي هذه المدوّنة هو أولادنا المقيمين بالخارج واللّغة العربيّة. عندما أكرمنا اللّه أنا و زوجتي و أرزقنا بالبنين لم نفكَر بتَا في تعليمهم لغتنا الجميلة, حتَي لمّا كان والدينا وأقاربنا يلحّوا علينا أن نفعل ذلك و لو حتَّى في العطلة. كنّا دائما نقول لهم أنّ هذه الّلغة لن تنفعهم بتاتا في عصرنا هذا, عصر المعلومات و العولمة ولغتها الرّسميّة ألا وهي الأنجلزيّة. وها نحن اليوم نتحسّر علي هذا القرار الخاطئ و نساهم في اضمحلال هذه اللّغة الجميلة الرّقيقة و الغنيّة. لغة الفرسان و الشّعراء, لغة الثَوّار و المولوعين. كيف لي أن أوصل إلي أبنائي مشاعري لمّا أقرأ للمتنبّي ‘الخيل و اللَيل والبيداء تعرفني و السّيف و الرّمح و القرطاس و القلم....‘ كيف لي أن أترجم روعات أبو الطّيّب أو المعرّي أو معجزة القرآن الكريم.

إحساسي بالأقصار في حقّ ابنائي و حقّ لغتنا لا يعادله إلا إحساسي بالعجز في إصلاح هذه الغلطة فأنّهم الآن بلغوا سنّا لا يسمح إجبارهم علي تعليمها فابني البكر يتعلّم في الأسبانيّة و الآخر يرغب في اتقان الصّينيّة. واللّغة العربيّة في أذهانهم هي لغة ميّتة كاللّغة اللاتينيّة أو اللّغة الغوتيّة. لكن في نفس الوقت ، لا أظنّ أنّ تعليمهم بنفسي كان سيفيدهم كثيرا لأنّ أقصي حدّا كانا سيبلغونه لا يتعدّي مستوي الثاّلثة ابتدائي و هذا ليس مقبول. الحلّ هو مدرسة مزدوجة اللّغات كالمدارس الأمريكيّة أو الفرنسيّة المتواجدة في كلّ بلاد العالم. هناك مدرستان عربيّة أوبلأحرّ اسلاميّة لكن لمّا ذهبنا للاستطلاع عليها استقبلنا في الحالتان شيخا ذو لحية طويلة مرتديا جلباب أفغاني و كان هناك بنات متحجّبات لم يتجاوز أعمارهنّ عشرة سنوات. فبرغم أنّ هذه المداس متفوّقة و معترف بها في كاليفورنيا والولايات المتَحدة فأنّها لا تتماشي مع المحيط الّذي نريد تريبة أولادنا فيه.

طبعا وبالتَأكيد لست أنا الوحيد الَذي يعيش هذا الموقف و لست استثناء ولكن هذا حال أغلبيّة أولاد المهاجرين. أنَه من السّهل الممتنع أن نتجاهل هذه المشكلة ونمرّ أمامها مرور الكرام بما أنَها ليست قضيّة مصيريّة حسب القيم المتعامل بها في بلادنا في هذا العصر. أَنّ جاليتنا بالخارج تناهز 800000 أي ما يقارب 8 في المئة من الشّعب التَونسي فهل هذا صواب؟

I am optimistic by nature and I hardly give up on anything, I keep trying, I am very patient. I am like that also with people. I try to never judge anyone, and if I do, it is always based on facts and patterns and not on emotion. But sometimes I can’t take it anymore, I just loose it, and it always happens because of man without honor.

Honor is an endangered noun that means a careful sense of what is right, a very high standard of integrity, and a scrupulous moral behavior. We are not born honorable, we are raised to be one and when one is, he is honor bound; he is under an obligation enforced by his personal integrity, not by law, not by fear of anyone or anything including religion or beliefs.

Nowadays, the use of this noun is mostly used in recognition for distinction and especially for the dead. As in ceremony in honor of Mr. X. Or to address officials as in His honor, the Judge Y. It is used also as a privilege as in “It is an honor meeting you!”

As an adjective, I don’t remember qualifying anyone as honorable for a long time, except my father may he rest in peace, my mother and wife and that’s because they’re my family.

Ironically honor is nowadays associated with criminals, Mafiosi who steal, sell drugs, run brothels but have a code of honor that they keep using to justify swift revenge on anyone who fails it. It is associated with old fashioned, uneducated people who kill their daughters, or wives in its name because a loss of virginity or for infidelity. It is associated to land for poor farmers. That’s it folks!! It really lost its true meaning!!!

I want to have honorable friends, honorable relatives, honorable associates, and honorable colleagues. I want to deal with honorable businesses, honorable officials. I want to be represented and be ruled by honorable people. Honor bound people….

Summary:
MSFT business model relies mainly on software sales with its #1 revenue generator and flagship product “Office”. Even though MSFT seems to be big, a slow to react company, it is in reality a group of hundreds of small companies working as a startup giving it an incredible ability to fight any competitors, IBM pc division, Lotus, Netscape, AOL and Real Networks are some companies who tried to get in its way and learned their lesson the hard way. MSFT is not an innovative company, it is an execution company. They don’t acquire businesses, they acquire technology. Their gross profit is provocative, almost 75% of their revenues and they never had a massive layoff.

GOOG business model relies on a cash cow of 400,000 companies pouring money to win clicks from Google web site and its affiliates. Even though Google sells search appliances and Google earth software for corporate, their main revenue is coming from ads and not from products. The revenues declared by Google, quarter after quarter are insane and not following the same pattern as rival Yahoo or MSN. Google masters the simple idea it is exploiting and put technology to it is side to turn the web into a cash machine with a flawless execution.

If I have to answer the question at the beginning of the post, I will put $500 on each and be sure that in 20 years, you will be sitting on a nice nest.

PS: Microsoft employees have the biggest ratio of millionaires per 100 employees in fortune 500 companies.

World Wealth Distribution

I got bored before breaking the fasting of the last day of this blessed month, I spent some time browsing the world bank web site, which I agree is not the best way to get rid of boredom :-)

This is what I came up with.

According to the World Bank and for the year 2005 the total world GDP is $44.384 trillion for 183 countries. The first 10 countries listed below represent almost $30 trillion or 68% of the total.

The world population being 6.3 billion and the population for the first 10 economies being 2.23 billion, this leads to the fact that 35% of the world population owns 68% of the world wealth (note that China population inflates that number significantly)

We should take in consideration that the distribution of this GDP within a country is not the same for all these 10 countries (i.e China vs US). depending on the political system of each countries.

A special mention to China. With a sustained growth of 8 to 10% a year since 1990, China just overtook the UK in 2004 by just $94 million to become the 4th largest economy. By projection, it will overtake Germany in 2007 and by year 2041 it will be the world largest economy, thanks to what I call National Capitalism (I'll try to elaborate more on this in a future post).

Tunisia is ranked 67th which is not bad at all for a young and small country with limited resources.

NewsWeek poll: 55% will vote for Democrats

A Newsweek poll puts Democrats in control of congress with a 55% votes, 10 points ahead of republicans. This number is huge in a US election where the gap between the reps and dems is always a single digit ranging from 1 to 6.

Given that the elections are in 2 weeks, on November 7th (this has nothing to do with TN ;-)) ,this puts the republicans in a bad spot and put more pressure on them.
Let's hope it stays this way, because after all the scandals ranging from corruption to luring teens for sex, not to mention the most important thing, which is that this congress signed the most dangerous bills in the history of the USA (support of war, surveillance, military tribunal..)

Tunisie: explosion près d'une raffinerie à Bizerte
TUNIS (AP) - Une explosion s'est produite vendredi matin dans la zone de la raffinerie de Bizerte, ville portuaire située à 60km au nord de Tunis, a-t-on appris auprès de témoins oculaires. Il n'y aurait pas de victimes.

L'explosion a eu lieu à environ deux kilomètres de la raffinerie, au niveau de la conduite menant vers le terminal pétrolier du port. Selon les mêmes sources, des nuages de fumée étaient visibles à plusieurs kilomètres à la ronde.

Selon une source officielle, un incendie s'est déclaré sur les pipelines à l'arrivée des produits pétroliers du dépôt de la raffinerie. Le feu, qui a provoqué deux déflagrations, a causé des dégâts matériels, sans engendrer cependant de pertes humaines, précisait-on de même source.
Les raisons précises de cet incident ne sont pas encore connues, mais des travaux étaient en cours sur les pipelines avant l'incident, a confié la même source, en ajoutant des équipes de secours étaient parvenues à circonscrire l'incendie en un seul foyer et poursuivaient leurs efforts en milieu d'après-midi pour venir à bout des flammes. Des hélicoptères déversaient de l'eau sur le lieu du sinistre.

Family tragedy

The following story is the worst nightmare of any family and immigrant families in particular; it is a proof of how vulnerable is a family to the cruel events of life.

Last night, we had a couple of friends over. They are Palestinians and we invited them along with their kids to break their fasting together. They told us a tragic story that happened to one of the residents in their neighborhood.

The guy, a Persian (Iranian) whose wife died from cancer 2 years ago, lives with his 12 old year’s boy and 15 years girl. Last Friday he came home and found his daughter having a nervous breakdown, she was crying and not answering his questions. He kept on comforting her and asking her to tell him about her problem, she told him. It dropped a bomb on the guy; she got pregnant by a 17 years old boy during a back to school party!!. The guy was not even from here, he was visiting from Dallas, Texas.

The poor father could not take it and he lost it, he was slapping himself, slapping his daughter and breaking furniture...Etc. The girl, acting as a good student, did exactly what the teacher told her to do if one of the parents abused her physically; she called the police and ran away from the house. The father followed her and caught her and he started pushing her and even dragging her back to the home, just when the cops arrived to witness it all!

The cops drew their guns right away, asking the guy to back off, face down, hands on the head, spread his legs...etc. This tragedy ended by the guy arrested for child abuse and endangerment and anything the prosecutor could find. The kids were taken by social workers to be placed in a foster family. Basically, the family got destroyed in less than 30mn.

Some will say, it is the father fault, some will say it’s the daughter’s fault; some will blame the police and the government for being extra zealous!! I say they’re all wrong and unlucky.

All what I know is what my mom taught me. She taught me that it is not enough to love someone when it is easy, you got to love him when it is hard, when they don’t deserve it, when they are in trouble, when they are a mess. That's what a FAMILY does. If both father and daughter knew this, they would have behaved differently. At least I think so!

Second Life, follow up.

Second life, the most popular virtual reality application is gaining more momentum (see my previous post). Sun Microsystems hosted the first virtual news conference, IBM is working on virtual recreation of China’s Forbidden City, and Intel is extending a virtual promotion of its Core Duo processors and the latest addition comes from the respectable Reuters which extended its news service to Second Life. Other famous brands like Toyota and Sony have also a virtual presence.

Of course, with all the buzz around it and all the money changing hands ($350,000 a day) on this virtual world, uncle Sam got interested and wants a piece of the pie. Since the currency used on Second life, the Liden, is convertible to US dollars, it brought attention to the US congress, where some lawmakers are thinking about taxes. To be continued.

40 ans...!!!

Généralement mon horloge interne est assez consistante, je me réveille toujours à 6h du matin du lundi au vendredi et a 9h le samedi et dimanche. Aujourd’hui, je me suis réveillé à 8h !!!

A peine ai-je ouvert les yeux que j’ai senti quelque chose de bizarre, un genre de douleur légère, non c’est une crampe, et puis je me rends compte que c’est tout juste une érection matinale ! Du coup, j’insulte ce maudit diable pour ces pensées impures durant ce mois saint, mais bon je ne me rappelle même pas du rêve qui a engendré cette réaction physiologique ayant entrainée un flux de sang vers mes organes génitaux. D’ailleurs ceci ne m’est pas arrivée depuis des..euh .. des semaines, donc même en maudissant le diable, je sentais quelque part un sentiment de joie et fierté, je ne suis pas si vieux que ca.

Sur ce, je me tourne pour s’apercevoir que ma femme n’est pas à cote de moi, Tiens, c’est bizarre car pendant les week-ends on se réveille un peu tard tout les deux, bof, elle doit avoir des choses à faire.

J’allume la télé, elle est sur National Geographic Channel, un documentaire sur les vipères mortelles, trop violent. Sur History Channel il y a « Decoding the past » qui essaient de trouver les origines de la notion de paradis et enfer et les symboles qui les représentaient dans les différentes civilisations, trop spirituel. Discovery Channel font une journée spéciale Tsunami, sur ESPN, un combat de boxe que j’ai regardé pendant deux minutes, vu que j’ai pratique ce sport quand j’étais adolescent, mais la qualité du combat n’était pas encourageante, je décide donc de me lever.

Je m’assis au bord du lit, met les pieds sur le sol pour commencer à me lever et c’est cette douleur que j’ai senti au niveau des genoux, épaules et dos qui me rappelle que je ne suis plus jeune. Les quelques mètres qui me séparent de la porte de la salle de bain de notre chambre paraissent plus long, enfin j’y suis, je suis en face du miroir, les mains appuyés sur le bord de l’évier pour alléger la pression sur les pieds, le corps légèrement courbé a l’avant. Tiens, la bataille des couleurs de cheveux et poils est maintenant nettement gagnée par les cheveux blancs donnant une couleur poivre. Mes oncles et mon père ont tous eu les cheveux complètement blancs avant la cinquantaine, je ne serais pas l‘exception, mais c’est mieux que la calvitie, non ? Je dois considérer me passer de la barbe de trois jours que je garde depuis des années, les poils blanc et noir ne sont pas uniformément distribué, et cela donne un résultat médiocre. Ah ces grains de beautés, ils prolifèrent, j’en ai partout maintenant, surtout au niveau des épaules, dos et des bras et il parait que c’est un autre signe de vieillesse. Ma femme me réconforte en m’expliquant que c’est à cause de ma peau claire que j’ai abusé par le soleil sans aucune protection. A part les petits sacs sous les paupières, le changement de la texture de la peau qui est plus sèche, les débuts de perte d’élasticité de la peau des joues, tout le reste est parfait !!!. Bon je n’ai plus les abdominaux visibles, les trapèzes gonflées et les pectoraux que j’avais à 20 ans (eh oui, j’ai un passé athlétique), mais j’ai gardé la forme en V, même si j’ai 2 ou 3 kg à perdre.

Sur le plan médical, ca se passe bien, une tension de 12/7 un taux de cholestérol de 105 et 0.89 pour les glycémies, c’est acceptable. Il faut dire que depuis que ma consommation de cigarettes a baissé à 3 ou 4 par jour, je me sens mieux. En effet, sous la pression de mes enfants et famille, je ne fume presque plus, au fait mes enfants croient que j’ai arrêté mais je fume un paquet par semaine en cachette bien sur !

Bon, je mets un short, un tee-shirt et je commence à descendre les escaliers quand j’entends des bruits de rires étouffés, murmures et excitations mais je ne vois rien encore. Je commence à demander qu’est ce qui se passe, et là tout le bruit s’arrête. Ca y ‘est je suis en bas et je vois mes enfants et ma femme avec un tas de papier cadeau qu’ils essaient maladroitement de cacher. Du coup, ca me revient, quel crétin, c’est mon anniversaire ! J’ai 40 ans !!!

Ma femme était presque furieuse que je me suis levé plus tôt que d’habitude, ils prévoyaient de mettre tout les cadeaux autour du lit et être autour de moi à mon réveil pour me souhaiter un joyeux 40eme anniversaire. Ma fille de 7 ans a même commencé à pleurer car j’ai gâché la surprise. Merde, ca ne se passe jamais comme dans les films. Qui a dit film ? Et c’est la que j’ai l’idée de faire en sorte comme si rien n’est arrivé, on s’est mis d’accord pour que je retourne au lit et fait semblant de dormir pour qu’ils puissent exécuter leurs plans, ce que j’ai fait.

C’était merveilleux, même si je me sens un peu vieux et que j’ai une envie terrible de faire la fête, de sortir en boite, de mettre des jeans avec des trous, des boucles d’oreilles en diamant, conduire une Ferrari testa rossa… bref c’est la « middle life crisis » mais je sais que je ne ferais jamais ca, euuuh peut être la testa rossa quand-même.

J’ai ajouté deux CD a ma collection, une compilation de Mark Nofler et une de Georges Michael, offerts par mes deux garçons,qui commencent a trouver que la musique des 80s/90s n'est pas aussi "off:" que ca.J'ai aussi droit a un dessin génial ou je me reconnais en face d’un ordinateur avec ma fille sur mes genoux, cadeau de ma princesse et une bouteille de parfum « Pi » de GIVENCHY accompagné d’une note amoureuse qui m’a fait rougir et m’a rappelé le bonheur dans lequel je vis depuis 16 ans. 7amdoullah.

Ce nouveau livre vient de paraitre chez "la découverte". L'auteur est chercheur CNRS en sciences po. Présentation de l'éditeur

Les violations des droits de l'homme et l'absence d'opposition politique dans les dictatures font régulièrement l'objet de critiques. Ce que l'on connaît moins, c'est le fonctionnement intime de ces régimes, les mécanismes par lesquels des populations entières se trouvent durablement assujetties. C'est ce travail de dévoilement qu'a entrepris Béatrice Hibou. A la croisée de deux traditions intellectuelles, l'économie politique wébérienne et l'analyse foucaldienne, elle analyse, à partir du cas de la Tunisie, les modes de gouvernement et les dispositifs de l'exercice concret du pouvoir. Elle montre comment ces dispositifs façonnent les modalités de l'obéissance, voire de l'adhésion. L'auteur fait émerger les rationalités des mécanismes d'assujettissement à partir de l'analyse de l'économie tunisienne. Elle explique ainsi comment l'économie d'endettement, la fiscalité, la gestion des privatisations, l'organisation de la solidarité et de l'aide sociales créent des processus de dépendance mutuelle entre dirigeants et dirigés. Lately I came across a very original net application called “Second life”. The concept of this app is stunning and shows that there is no limit for entrepreneur’s imagination to turn anything in a profitable business.

Second life is a virtual/digital earth, it all starts by leasing a piece of land that ranges from 500 square meters for $5 a month to an entire region of 65536 square meters for $195 a month. Once you lease the land you become a second life resident or “avatar” and you can start interacting with the other 850,000 residents. You can purchase their lands, invent objects and sell them, trade pets, clothes or anything you can imagine or even have a job.

The app has a set of design and script tooling allowing you to build anything you can imagine. You can create your own look, make yourself able to fly or breathe in water or anything you can imagine in the limit of what 3D computer graphics allow you

The San jose mercury news states that organizations like Major league baseball, Harvard university, Cnet.com and other are rushing to get a presence in second life, even musicians like Duran Duran, broadcast virtual concerts.

The daily volume of the trade in this digital world is in the hundred of thousands of dollars for a GDP of $150M. Residents are building libraries, stores and new concepts that exist only in second life, even the oldest job in the world like the French say exist (residents can pay for sex). So if you’re not happy with your real life, consider getting a second one :-)

Linden lab the San Francisco company creator of second life is said to be almost profitable and is backed by Silicon Valley VC firms.

Google said to buy YouTube for $1.6B

Google (GOOG) is up $10.00 this morning on the rumors that it would announce today a deal to buy the online video service YouTube for $1.6B.

It seems that YouTube burning rate for their bandwidth bill was very high and they could not sustain it anymore since they still don't have a revenue model.

YouTube assets are in the million more subsribers and the 100 million videos download per day and for Google that's a lot of opportunity for ads placement.

In my opinion the problem with YouTube is that it is a copyright infringment machine since they do not control or filter what their subscribers upload. Companies like Universal and Sony are asking for hundreds of million of dollars in license fees due to uploaded movies or copyrighted songs used as soundtrack for amateur videos. I am sure Google has a plan to solve this since they already developed technology for GoogleVideos to indentify and filter out suspected copyright materials for further human inspection, or else this could turn into another Napster.

Anyway, kudos to the founders of YouTube for turning a very simple idea to a $1.3B in less than 19 months. These 3 former PayPal employees, one of them Karim Jawed who I had the chance to meet personally, a young native german speaker with arab origins, happened to be in the right time, in the right place with the right connections. They were funded by Sequoia Capital, a famous VC in the valley that also funded our first startup and have Google, Oracle,Apple,Yahoo and Cisco in their portfolio!!

I hope that this would go through and then we can say "Congratulations" to these entrepreneurs.

The 'P' words

P comme passion à consommer avec modération. Qu'on l'exerce envers une personne, une idée, une activité ou une religion, l'excès engendre toujours des effets non désirés.

P as power, something to exercise with caution. Whatever the object or subject on which you have power, treat it as if you're going to be judged the next day and don't be scared to lose it or else you'll be abusing it.

P comme politique ou l'obsession d'avoir toujours raison et de justifier l'injustifiable

P as prison, where we lose our cherished freedom and dignity. Most of the times rightfully, but unfortunately, sometimes wrongfully.

P comme patriote, on l'est tous forcement même si parfois on le cache bien.

P as plan, a concept that makes the difference between winners and losers

P comme polémique qui s'injecte dans nos discussions pour les rendre inutiles

P as in parent, the most honorable job where perks come in the form of pride and joy if well done, or shame and depression if not.

P comme peur, un sentiment horrible qu'on déteste car il engendre la soumission

P as in poor, a word that should have never existed if we were all more generous and less selfish

P comme politesse, un comportement qui est devenu tellement rare qu'il engendre parfois la moquerie

P as priorities, which we always have wrong.

So let's pray that our politicians from whatever party use their power wisely, have their priority straight, avoid polemics, plan for peace with enough passion and professionalism, think about the poorest and restore their pride. Show us the path so we can teach our kids "patience, politesse et pureté d'âme". C'est comme ca qu'on accédera aux premiers rangs. Or else the price to pay will be excessive

18 députés dont 3 minsitres en Prison depuis 3 mois.

"Maintien en détention de 18 députés du Hamas arrêtés en juin
BASE MILITAIRE D’OFER, Cisjordanie (AP) — Un tribunal militaire israélien a ordonné hier le maintien en détention de 18 élus du Hamas jusqu’à la fin de leur procès.

Israël avait arrêté ces députés, parmi lesquels figurent trois ministres du gouvernement de l’Autorité palestinienne, en juin, après la capture par des militants proches du Hamas d’un soldat de l’armée d’occupation israélienne.

La semaine dernière, la justice israélienne avait ordonné la libération sous caution de ces prisonniers pendant le processus judiciaire. Le bureau du procureur militaire d’Israël avait fait appel de cette décision.

La question de leur libération dans le cadre d’un échange avec le soldat israélien enlevé avait été évoquée."

Personnellement, je n’adhère pas à la ligne politique suivie par le Hamas qui ne donne pas une chance à la paix dans ce pays ravagé par un demi-siècle de guerre. Ce qui reste du peuple palestinien mérite mieux qu’une politique d’entêtement et de haine, mais ce gouvernement a été élu par ce même peuple et on ne peut que respecter et accepter ce choix.

Je ne veux pas polémiquer sur les raisons qui ont hissé ce mouvement au pouvoir, même si cela suit un pattern qui est en vogue en ce moment.

Ce qui est injustifiable c’est les actions du gouvernement israélien, à qui tout est permis et surtout le silence des grands de ce monde envers ces actions.

Sur quelle base juridique, la justice israélienne peut maintenir ces gens en prison? Il s’agit de 18 députés, élus au suffrage universel, dont 3 ministres en exercice!!

Au fait, il ne faut même pas essayer de comprendre. It’s a hopeless case.

Global Warming WARNING!

Lately, on two occasions, someone recommended the film “An inconvenient truth”, so I decided to go see it, which I did yesterday.

Most of the footage of the film is from a slide show that Al Gore (ex US VP) used in more than a 1000 meetings he did trying to educate people about the effect of the CO2 level increase and global warming.

The slide show is very impressive, the data is very accurate and agreed upon by the majority of scientists, and the truth is very inconvenient indeed because the effect of global warming is catastrophic.

Average temperatures jumped 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in a lot of major cities of the world like NY or Beijing in the last 20 years. I myself witnessed this for my birth city TUNIS, in Tunisia. I remember that 20 years ago, summer temperatures were lower than today’s. It was very unusual to reach the 40’s; nowadays it is reached almost daily, and AC is becoming as necessary as a refrigerator. Another effect that we Tunisians can verify, is the rise of the see levels that made a lot of our beaches shrink to sometimes a few meters, so that houses that were built 100 ft from the sea are now a few feet away.

The increase of the CO2 level is also creating a preferential selection for weed plants and other invasive plants that strive in high CO2 levels and can be harmful to agriculture, cities and even at sea.

Global warming causes higher sea evaporation to produce stronger and killer hurricanes as we all noticed in the last few years. Hurricane season cost more every year to the countries on the hurricane path whether in money or in human fatalities.

The scariest effect is the melting of the glaciers (a.k.a Glacier retreat).This can cause 20% of the caostal land of all continents to be flooded, including major parts of Florida, Manhattan Island in NY…etc.

Global warning and its effects is now considered by scientists as a fact and not a theory. Unfortunately the corporate lobbies and their hired politicians try to confuse the populations by creating counter organizations and environmental think tank who states that Global warming is a theory created by alarmist tree huggers (environmentalist). This propaganda will cost them less than trying to reduce the Co2 emission from their plants, cars, Etc.

Reversing or even stopping global warming is a responsibility for all of us, towards our children and grand children. What countries like the US, China and others are doing, will for sure result in death and destructions to our kids and theirs.

For energy consuming companies, cars manufacturers and other CO2 emitters corporations, spending money on lobbying and disinformation will cost them far less than reducing CO2 levels in their plants or products and that’s why the state of California is taking a lead role as usual by suing 5 auto makers for these emissions and their effects. The outcome of this suit will shape the legal framework for this issue.

Fortunately, a lot of momentum is being built around this issue with the involvement of some key figures like Al Gore, Bill Clinton who just raised $7 Billion for the cause and donations coming from wealthy entrepreneurs like British multi-billionaire and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson who pledged $3 Billion over the next 10 years.

On another note,like many others I think that Al Gore should not have been the narrator or the presenter of “An inconvenient truth”, since he is a democrat and given his loser image, it will prevent the majority of republicans to go see a film perceived as an Al Gore PR event, and it would create more controversy and affect its credibility. They should have left politics out of this one.
